Thrown into the Troubled Sea By: Patricia Summers People say, “It’s not what happens to you, but how you handle it.” Three countries, several lives, but one family. It is Patricia Summers’ past, future, and present. Just a small kid that was thrown into the sea of life; deemed at birth she would be in a children’s nursing home, but her God stepped in and had other plans for her. A team of doctors took twenty-three hours to do the surgery. One, at that time, was not done before and one was a complete success, but down through her life she was one of them, to show that the struggles in the sea do not cause you to drown, she was able to walk on the other shore, cold, wet, and shaken, but on a firm foundation, with God by her side.

In the early 1600’s, with Dutch power and prestige on the rise, the Dutch form the world’s first publicly-traded corporation whose purpose is to break Portugal’s trade monopoly in the Far East. Led by the mysterious and ruthless Gentlemen Seventeen, the Company has its own armies, its own ships and has the power to wage war, annex territory and make laws. In the New World life is better than fair for Mary - until grim misfortune finds her. A freakish wave during a monstrous storm off the coast of Florida sweeps her overboard and she is lost. Mary’s plucky, protégé Elizabeth - headstrong, full of Spanish fire and raw ambition, but also very young - assumes command. With prospects dwindling in the West Indies following Mary’s death, Elizabeth pledges Mary’s ships and men to the Company and agrees to sail to the Spice Islands in the East Indies for nutmeg, mace, cloves and pepper - cargo more valuable than gold. When Elizabeth exceeds her authority and ventures to Portuguese-held Macau, she is introduced to a powerful Chinese merchant named Féng Wú - and to the plentiful opium served liberally at the House of a Thousand Pleasures. When Elizabeth is later betrayed a ship is lost and the crew is slaughtered. As Elizabeth falters Mary, having survived her misfortunes, returns. When Mary learns that the Company has seized her ships and men because of Elizabeth’s foolishness, she must agree to sail into war alongside the Dutch to free them. Once she fulfills her obligations to the Company, Mary will sail on to Macau where she will introduce herself to the men who murdered her crew... “… [P]aced like an adventure movie, filled with sea battles, colorful bit players, and double crosses … a rousing, sprawling yarn about two indefatigable pirate women.” - Kirkus Reviews

The dramatic transformation of Australia's northern seas from an ignored backwater to the most militarized and fiercely guarded waters in the region is chronicled in this fascinating volume. Once a bridge between two coastlines and two cultures, in the last years of the 20th century the Timor Sea has become Australia's frontline against the threat of invasion. When Australia expanded its territorial boundaries by 200 nautical miles in 1979, its territory reached the doorstep of eastern Indonesia an occupation driven by the concept of "mare nullius," the idea that the sea was empty and that no one would suffer for their claims. But for the traditional fishermen of West Timor, these waters represented the source of their livelihood, and this powerful story includes the struggles of a people evicted from their seas.

Once the landlocked backwater between Iran and the Soviet Union, the Caspian has in the last ten years emerged as the epicentre of vast conflicting interests in a region where massive geopolitical issues converge with enormous energy resources and dramatic latent instability. Russia's conflict in Chechnya is a direct by-product of the strategic importance of the Caspian region. _Troubled Waters_ presents a comprehensive analysis of the political and economic dynamics of the Caspian basin. It examines the area's historical evolution and the diverse issues and players in what has become a modern variant of the Great Game' of the nineteenth century. Following a historical overview of the region and its oil industries, the book analyses the domestic politics and the foreign policies of the five states bordering the Caspian- Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. It further identifies all the external interests involved in the Caspian's political rivalries and control over its resources and territory, including the US, the major European powers, various nationalist movements, Islamic militants, multi-national corporations, NGOs and international financial institutions. These features, coupled with the political and economic risk assessment of the Caspian basin which this book provides, makes this a unique contribution to our understanding of a region which is strategically positioned at the territorial juncture of Russia, China, East Asia and the Middle East.

This book tells the story of my journey through boarding school and onto offshore radio in the North Sea. It is a recollection of events from my perception only, which took place during my time on a number of radioships. As you will read, sheer dedication and strength of mind was required by all parties over the years to allow the offshore enterprises to survive. Radio Caroline was the central passion for me, as it was for so many others, and I felt it was never on the cards to give up the fight to survive at sea. Nevertheless, remembering every event, and those people involved, was difficult and I trust I do not upset anybody by telling stories they would rather forget. (No malice is intended by anything written in this tome) A few names have been left out to spare embarrassment, but I hope the narrative remains complete. Memories from my younger days are included, as I would like to think they help complete the overall picture of how I thought and behaved, and what shaped me as I grew up.
