Missio Alliance Essential Reading List Hearts Minds Bookstore's Best Books RELEVANT's Top 10 Books Englewood Review of Books Best Books When Soong-Chan Rah planted an urban church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, his first full sermon series was a six-week exposition of the book of Lamentations. Preaching on an obscure, depressing Old Testament book was probably not the most seeker-sensitive way to launch a church. But it shaped their community with a radically countercultural perspective. The American church avoids lament. But lament is a missing, essential component of Christian faith. Lament recognizes struggles and suffering, that the world is not as it ought to be. Lament challenges the status quo and cries out for justice against existing injustices. Soong-Chan Rah's prophetic exposition of the book of Lamentations provides a biblical and theological lens for examining the church's relationship with a suffering world. It critiques our success-centered triumphalism and calls us to repent of our hubris. And it opens up new ways to encounter the other. Hear the prophet's lament as the necessary corrective for Christianity's future. A Resonate exposition of the book of Lamentations.

Evidence amassed in Troubled Times indicates that, much like in the modern world, violence was not an uncommon aspect of prehistoric dispute resolution. From the civilizations of the American Southwest to the Mesolithic of Central Europe, the contributors examine violence in hunter-gatherer as well as state societies from both the New and Old Worlds. Drawing upon cross-cultural analyses, archaeological data, and skeletal remains, this collection of papers offers evidence of domestic violence, homicide, warfare, cannibalism, and ritualized combat among ancient peoples. Beyond the physical evidence, various models and explanations for violence in the past are explored.

Trust In Troubled Times written by Brett Sheehan and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Business & Economics categories.

This timely book traces the development of banking and paper money in republican Tianjin in order to explore the creation of social trust in financial institutions. Framing the study around Bian Baimei, a conscientious branch manager of the Bank of China, Brett Sheehan analyzes the actions of bankers, officials, and local elites as they tried to overcome political and financial crises and instill trust in the banking system. After early failures in promoting trust, government authority as a regulator of the financial system gradually increased, peaking in 1935, when the state unified the money supply for the first time in several hundred years. Concurrently, when local elites proved unable to develop successful strategies to make people trust the system, their influence declined. The need for trust in increasingly complex financial arrangements redefined state-society relations, simultaneously enhancing state power and creating new constraints on the actions of both elites and governments. Trust in Troubled Times is a valuable new perspective on the economic, social, and political history of modern China.

This is a tale of fifteenth-century England troubled times times of medieval knights, mayhem, war, and of friendship, honor, and determination. England has a weak king who has ruled too long. Powerful magnates seek to rob the king of his wealth, of his authority, and of his majesty. It is a time of deceit and double-dealing, of theft and violence, of murder and war. Into these times come William Wulfgar Howard, the bastard son of a wayward knight, and John Hugh Fitzalan, high-born aristocrat. In the halls and tilting yards of Arundel Castle, they quickly become friends. Together they strive to become young gentlemen, skilled warriors, and chivalrous esquires. Thrust into war when barely a dozen years old, they find high adventure, rich spoils, and much more. Stepping into the waning years of the Hundred Years War, they must quickly absorb the skills of professional warriors and fight battles on land and sea, struggling to save a lost cause. Along the way, they find that a quick blade is sometimes as valuable as a quick wit, and that friendship is worth more than wealth.

In Troubled Times written by Adrian Jarvis and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-18 with History categories.

This study provides a history of the Port of Liverpool between 1905 and 1938, during its decline. It is particularly interested in the history of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, Liverpool’s enormous and sole port authority. Adrian Jarvis contrasts the decision-making process of the Board with the financial history of the docks, in attempt to evaluate the Board successes and failures. The study accounts for and explores the factors which contributed to the decline of Liverpool’s shipping industry, with topics ranging from the growth of railways, the advances in shipping technology, the success of commercial liners, to the Great Depression and Great War. The study is complemented with an appendix exploring the efficiency of ports; a bibliography; a note on the sources; an index; and a conclusion that asserts the overall merit of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board when considering the tremendous and often unpredictable challenges the Board faced, such as wartime disruption.
