Troy is one of the most historic cities in the United States. Originally the home of the Mohican tribe, the area was settled by the Dutch in the early eighteenth century and the city itself was founded by the Vanderheyden family in 1787. Troy holds claim to being the birthplace of America's Industrial Revolution, and a major manufacturer of iron products during the 1800s. Troy has earned some distinctive titles in its 230 years of existence, and was referred to as "The Home of Uncle Sam," and "The Collar City." In his latest book, Troy Through Time, local historian Don Rittner looks at the city's rich heritage and with informative captions provides comparative then and now photographs showing the dramatic changes the city has gone through--especially during the past century. Due to the confluence of major waterways and the accompanying water power, industry favored Troy making it one of the wealthiest cities in the United State and the end of the nineteenth century. Troy, therefore, is noted for a wealth of Victorian architecture downtown and elaborate private homes in various neighborhoods. As industries have come and gone and as the street scenes have changed, Rittner takes the reader on a fascinating journey through time, showing how the impact of human activity to this riverside community.

The Trojan War is the most famous conflict in history, the subject of Homer's Iliad, one of the cornerstones of Western literature. Although many readers know that this literary masterwork is based on actual events, there is disagreement about how much of Homer's tale is true. Drawing on recent archeological research, historian and classicist Barry Strauss explains what really happened in Troy more than 3,000 years ago. For many years it was thought that Troy was an insignificant place that never had a chance against the Greek warriors who laid siege and overwhelmed the city. In the old view, the conflict was decided by duels between champions on the plain of Troy. Today we know that Troy was indeed a large and prosperous city, just as Homer said. The Trojans themselves were not Greeks but vassals of the powerful Hittite Empire to the east in modern-day Turkey, and they probably spoke a Hittite-related language called Luwian. The Trojan War was most likely the culmination of a long feud over power, wealth, and honor in western Turkey and the offshore islands. The war itself was mainly a low-intensity conflict, a series of raids on neighboring towns and lands. It seems unlikely that there was ever a siege of Troy; rather some sort of trick -- perhaps involving a wooden horse -- allowed the Greeks to take the city. Strauss shows us where Homer nods, and sometimes exaggerates and distorts, as well. He puts the Trojan War into the context of its time, explaining the strategies and tactics that both sides used, and compares the war to contemporary battles elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean. With his vivid reconstructions of the conflict and his insights into the famous characters and events of Homer's great epic, Strauss masterfully tells the story of the fall of Troy as history without losing the poetry and grandeur that continue to draw readers to this ancient tale.

"The Story of Troy" is a work of history written by author and historian M. Clarke. It is an excellent choice for those wishing to familiarise themselves with the story in a quick and efficient manner. Clarke opens his book with a brief discussion of Homer, author of "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," and whose writing serves as a major source of information about the history of Troy. The author then begins his interpretation of Troy with several chapters examining the city's geography and geo-political status. Of course, any history of Troy must address the Trojan War, and it is on this topic that Clarke spends the majority of his time. The writings of Homer, as translated by Alexander Pope, serve as Clarke's primary source of information about the war. The book proceeds in a logical fashion, and concludes with a chapter on the death of Achilles and the status of the Greek chiefs after the war. Clarke has created a well-written account of Troy's history. Although written in the nineteenth century, and therefore lacking in some of the historical breakthroughs of the modern world, "The Story of Troy" is still an interesting and useful interpretation of the events detailed. Clarke's writing is concise and definitive and this book could best be categorized as an introductory history. Readers interested in a basic history of Troy will enjoy "The Story of Troy." Clarke's passion is clear and his work here is commendable. This title is a worthy addition to the personal library of history enthusiasts everywhere. "Cassandra's destiny was sealed the moment Apollo, the god she spurned as a lover, spat into her mouth, forever condemning her power of prophecy to be disbelieved. Princess of Troy, daughter of Priam and Hecabe, sister of Paris and Hector, and finally prize captive of Agamemnon, Cassandra is central to the ancient Trojan story. Only she could know what fate would be brought to all, including her own at the hands of Clytemnestra. Passionately alive, Cassandra's disembodied voice echoes through time with an unheeded warning against the subjugation of woman and contamination of the earth. Dares Phrygius (Ancient Greek: Δάρης, Drēs; Middle Welsh: Dared), according to Homer, was a Trojan priest of Hephaestus. He was supposed to have been the author of an account of the destruction of Troy, and to have lived before Homer. A work in Latin, purporting to be a translation of this, and entitled Daretis Phrygii de excidio Trojae historia, was much read in the Middle Ages, and was then ascribed to Cornelius Nepos, who is made to dedicate it to Sallust; but the language is extremely advanced, and the work belongs to a period much later than the time of Nepos (probably the 5th century AD).It is doubtful whether the existing work is an abridgment of a larger Latin work or an adaptation of a Greek original. Together with the similar work of Dictys Cretensis (with which it is generally printed), the De excidio forms the chief source for the numerous medieval accounts of the Trojan legend, the so-called Matter of Troy.

Achilles is an old man who struggles to remember more about his past and how he failed to become fully immortal on the Trojan battlefield. He sees Helen appear before him and lead him to a river, which reminds him of the river in which he nearly lost all his mortality. He feels a tale being told as the events of the past gradually come back to him. "I once had a name. It was mine and mine alone. Now I fear that it will be forgotten in time, left alone to wither in the remote, unloved corners of recorded time. Kings and queens uttered it in a silence too precious to be heard. An inimitable dread lived in its shadow, in the fading whisper of its last spoken letter. It punctured the airy silence and then went its deep, untrodden, inaudible way. But it remained fixed in the stony interior of every fear-deprived heart, the heart of those who joined me in battle. All Myrmidons spoke it, forging the strength from which to feed their fearless advance toward the enemy. Their memory enshrined it, kissing the unknown behind syllables well-known, as if shedding off layers of untold complexity in a mere moment. I was the Myrmidon prince, the one that led a mighty contingent into a mass of Trojan infantrymen. Rivers of iron moved through me, streaming through my every vessel as glittering rays shone off an unyielding armor of bronze. I am now forgotten and unloved by both time and timelessness. Forever has fled from me, eluded me. I sit here alone at the edge of nowhere, feeling the stark cold fact of being no one. History will never remember me. Priam's eyes burn in my memory, reminding me of how the sweet flow of mortality remains unimpeded. I could have died young and be remembered forever. But I lived and doomed myself to anonymity. Helen appears before me from time to time, springing up from the air. The look in her eyes is always the same. Her beauty is the same. She never speaks, for her presence alone tugs at my heavy heart and tears through the mere thought of becoming as I once was. Now she is before me again. She remains still, but then she turns around and begins to walk into the distance. She wants me to follow her. This has never happened before. I rise and struggle to summon the mere semblance of strength. Helen never glances back to make sure I am following her. She knows I will."

Excerpt from Troy: Its Legend, History and Literature, With a Sketch of the Topography of the Troad in the Light of Recent Investigation The time seems to have come, however, for a fuller version of the Trojan legend, without either addition or important omission, as it was familiarly known to the ancients, who had access to many epics and traditions of which we have no knowledge except by extracts or allusions in the scholiasts, historians, and later Poets of Alexandria and Rome. In no one place can an entire account of the legend now be found. It is scattered in fragments throughout the epic, dramatic, philosophic, and critical writings of antiquity still extant, and is given with more or less fullness by modern historians; but is nowhere, so far as the writer is aware, presented in its complete form.
