A selection of Norwegian folktales chosen by Sigrid Undset, True and Untrue and Other Norse Tales is based on the classic folklore collected by Pieter Christian Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe. These wonderful stories tell of worlds similar to our own, worlds with love and hate, sorrow and joy, humor and pathos. Beginning with brothers named True and Untrue, the book takes readers through tales of princes and princesses, giants and trolls, husbands and wives, and a castle that is “East o’ the Sun and West o’ the Moon.” Strikingly illustrated by Frederick T. Chapman while under fire in Italy during the Second World War and with a remarkable foreword by Undset, True and Untrue and Other Norse Tales has a story for everyone.

This collection, True and Untrue and Other Norse Tales, edited by Sigrid Undset and illustrated by Frederick T. Chapman, contains twenty-eight classic Norse narratives. They include the folkloric stories of ‘East O’ the Sun and West O’ the Moon’, ‘The Seven Foals’, ‘Why the Sea is Salt’, ‘The Squire’s Bride’, and ‘The Master Thief’. The tales are accompanied by the masterful artwork of Frederick T. Chapman; a book and Magazine illustrator, who contributed to numerous publications including Woman’s Home Companion, Collier’s, and American Magazines. He is best known for his pioneering work in children’s books such as ‘Joan, Maid of France, ‘White Falcon’, and ‘Luther Burbank, Nature’s Helper.’ Presented alongside the text, Chapman’s enchanting creations serve to further refine and enhance the classic Nordic storytelling – making this a book to be enjoyed and appreciated, by both young and old alike. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

This is a volume of 59 Scandinavian folk tales originally collected over time by Asbjörnsen and Moe and translated into English by Sir George Webbe-Dasent. This is not a volume of Norse mythology per se; so if you are looking for tales of Odin, Thor, Loki, etc., we would refer you to a volume entitled The Children of Odin. Rather, this volume is more fairy and far less Viking in nature. This is an anthology of 59 Norse-themed folk and fairy tales, similar to those collected by the Grimm Brothers, or those found in Andrew Lang’s Many Coloured Fairy Books. In the 59 tales in this volume, all of the usual suspects are in place, including princes, princesses, fools, peasants who achieve seemingly impossible tasks, giants, trolls, elves, witches, evil step-siblings, magical boons, and anthropomorphic animals and beings, all making for a magical volume of Northern Folk and Fairy Tales. The introduction is exceptionally well written, and places various magical and other themes from the tales into the context of the ancient Norse Pagan beliefs. Once past the introduction, the prose directly addresses young people and young adults, and the delightful stories can be appreciated by readers of all ages. But be warned, despite these tales being magical in character, these are tales from an era when political correctness did not exist. In the words of the translator, “the person who, in such a work, wilfully changes or softens the meaning, is as guilty as they "who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter." So join with us and venture back in time to an age when the world still had a connection to the ethereal. A time when magic was still believed to exist and a time when Trolls, Elves, Nidhogg, Vargr and other magical beings still roamed the earth. Popular Tales from the Norse. Folklore, Fairy tales, Stories. An early book of 19th century, yet tops our present literature books. This is how it began; Once on a time there were two brothers; one was called True, and the other Untrue. True was always upright and good towards all, but Untrue was bad and full of lies, so that no one could believe what he said. Their mother was a widow, and hadn't much to live on; so when her sons had grown up, she was forced to send them away, that they might earn their bread in the world. Each got a little scrip with some food in it, and then they went their way. Now, when they had walked till evening, they sat down on a windfall in the wood, and took out their scraps, for they were hungry after walking the whole day, and thought a morsel of food would be sweet enough

Inspired by tales of the hero Vilmund Vidutan and his fellow knights, Sigurd Jonsson and his young friends Ivar and Helge set out to reenact these exploits on their medieval Norwegian farm. They carve swords and lances and spend hours making shields. With a little imagination, a pasture becomes a battlefield, an old boar their greatest foe, and they pass many hours jousting and dueling. But when the summer is nearly over, the three boys stumble into real trouble and must prove their courage in an adventure all their own. Written during Sigrid Undset’s time in New York, Sigurd and His Brave Companions will make medieval Norway come alive for young and old readers alike.
