Combining economic, social-psychological and sociological approaches to trust, this book provides a general theoretical framework to causally explain conditional and unconditional trust; it also presents an experimental test of the corresponding integrative model and its predictions. Broadly, it aims at advancing a cognitive turn in trust research by highlighting the importance of (1) an actor ́s context-dependent definition of the situation and (2) the flexible and dynamic degree of rationality involved. In essence, trust is as “multi-faceted” as there are cognitive routes that take us to the choice of a trusting act. Therefore, variable rationality has to be incorporated as an orthogonal dimension to the typological space of trust. The theory presents an analytically tractable model; the empirical test combines trust games, high- and low-incentive conditions, framing manipulations, and psychometric measurements, and is complemented by decision-time analyses.

This paper intends to analyze the foundations of trust in a context of bounded rationality. Building on previous work, we show how bounded rationality provides a rationale for the concept of trust that goes beyond the common calculative notion. We show that there are four types of trust and that people assess probabilities (with some fuzziness, in the context of bounded rationality) in order to determine whether to trust a recipient, depending on each of the four. We follow previous work, mainly by Mayer, Davis and Schoorman (1995) and show how bounded rationality provides additional arguments to show how competence (similar to ability), value systems (similar to integrity) and unselfishness (similar to benevolence) are necessary to underpin trust. We establish the parallel between the three aspects of trustworthiness that appear in their previous work, but we add additional explanations focused on bounded rationality. We also go one step further to consider the development of virtue as a crucial fourth aspect, which also supports the argument that trust can be reinforced between people and developed through time.

Experimental evidence and a host of recent theoretical ideas take aim at the common economic assumption that individuals are selfish. The arguments made suggest that intrinsic social preferences of one kind or another are at the heart of unselfish, pro-social behavior that is often observed. I suggest an alternative motive based on shame that is imposed by the extrinsic beliefs of others, which is distinct from the more common approaches to social preferences such as altruism, a taste for fairness, reciprocity, or self-identity perception. The motives from shame are consistent with observed behavior in previously studied experiments, but more importantly, they imply new testable predictions. A new set of experiments confirm both that shame is a motivator, and that trusting players are strategically rational in that they anticipate the power of shame. Some implications for policy and strategy are discussed.
