A proven model to create high-performing, high-trust organizations Globally, there has been a decline in trust over the past few decades, and only a third of Americans believe they can trust the government, big business, and large institutions. In The Decision to Trust, Robert Hurley explains how this new culture of cynicism and distrust creates many problems, and why it is almost impossible to manage an organization well if its people do not trust one another. In this book, Hurley reveals a new model to measure and repair trust with colleagues managers and employees. Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Leadership, grade: 1,0, University of Münster (Psychologie), language: English, abstract: This paper explores the benefits of building trust in teams. There is a good reason why trust is an often discussed topic in personnel management. In his book "Trust-based Leadership - Führen durch Vertrauen" from 2017, Martin Schmiedel explains the relationship between leader and employee with the analogy of two rock climbers: one that climbs a wall and another one that secures him. Schmiedel states that the supervisor is the one on the ground, giving the employee the required safety to climb the mountain. Moreover, he is able to maintain an overview and lead the way to the top. The employee on the other hand trusts him so that he can take risks to get to the summit. The metaphor illustrates a beneficial effect of trust: leaders who embrace their responsibility give their team security, which helps them to perform to their very best. You can conclude that trust and security are fundamental for employees to do a good job. If one of these components is missing, a team will not be as successful.

In the era of #metoo, &‘fake news' and &‘alternative facts' few would dispute that we face a global crisis around trust in the workplace and more broadly in society. When the CSIRO released its Australian National Outlook 2019, it identified trust as one of the future key challenges the nation faces in relation to governments, business, non-government organisations and the media. It is less likely that a company will be able to innovate and remain competitive if trust is low or absent. Prominent Australian educator Paul Browning faced this situation when the school he led became embroiled in The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Principled draws on Browning's first-hand experience of navigating an organisation through this highly public ethical crisis and outlines the challenges he faced as a leader. Bringing together evidence-based research and over 20 years of management experience, Paul Browning offers timely advice on the 10 key practices that can help executives build and develop skills to become more trustworthy leaders.

How leaders from the best workplaces build trust in their organizations The Trustworthy Leader reveals the benefits organizations enjoy when trustworthy behavior is practiced consistently by their leaders. Drawing from examples from the Best Companies to Work For, Lyman, cofounder of Great Place to Work Institute, explains that being trustworthy means that leaders' behaviors are rooted in their commitment to the value of trust and not simply in an imitation of the practices of others. She identifies six elements that reflect a leader's trustworthiness: honor, inclusion, engaging followers, sharing information, developing others, and moving through uncertainty to pursue opportunities. Features leaders from great companies such as REI, Wegman's, R.W. Baird, TDIndustries, and more Based on more than 20 years of rigorous research into the value of trust in companies large and small and its link to financial and organizational performance Published to coincide with the release of the FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For 2012 list This book offers a key to developing high levels of trust, a critical endeavor in an age when seemingly every day a story of a leader's lapse in ethical behavior makes headlines.
