A great deal of attention has been paid to the performance of international joint ventures (IJVs) and trust has been recognised as a key factor influencing it. This paper examines the emergence of trust as a process and develops a process model of trust building in IJVs, which is used to analyse four case studies. The main conclusions are the following: Whereas competence-based trust starts from public information, promissory-based trust and goodwill-based trust are individually orientated and mainly develop through direct personal interaction. Such interaction may lead to bonds of friendship between delegates. Before these bonds evolve, trust is mainly based on the perceived self-interest of the partner in the joint venture. When the bonds of friendship dominate, the main source of trust shifts towards emotional commitments. Thus, in the early stages of an IJV, promissory-based trust predominates, and as the joint venture progresses, competence-based trust emerges. Goodwill-based trust is important throughout the process. A commitment to cooperate emerges from initial self-interest. The model is capable of further development and testing.

Strategic alliances between multinational organizations have been prevalent for more than half a century. These alliances are costly to enter and yet, have a history of failure. International Joint Ventures (IJVs), which is a type of strategic alliance, has been an important mode of entry for companies aiming to operate in foreign markets. However, companies have been guarded of forming an IJV due to their high failure rate. Despite their shortcomings, joint ventures are valuable for several reasons, including sharing resources, gaining access to potentially closed markets, and learning complementary skills from the venture partner. However, he age of the alliance (or venture) is an important element in assessing whether the partners achieve their goals. This study looks at the relationship between the age of the joint venture, trust, commitment, and learning effectiveness in Indian international joint ventures. Results show that age of the joint venture is positively related to trust between partners, commitment to the venture, and learning that takes place as a result of the venture.

Ayios looks at the Western experience of doing business in Russia, and how trust between business partners from East and West is created or destroyed within the business relationship. This book provides the reader with an in-depth look at the key factors that lead international partners to trust each other in a business relationship. Detailed data gathered from practitioners during 1996 and 1997, across a variety of industry sectors, provides a thorough account of the cultural difficulties that are encountered in the Russian context, and methods that can be employed to enhance trust and increase the chances of business success. A final chapter brings the reader up to date with the current business situation and compares the findings from the mid-1990s to the situation today. It aims to provide a good understanding of the literature on trust, to give anyone with an interest in the development of inter-personal trust a firm grounding. This is one of the first attempts to gather data at a cross-cultural level on determinants of trust and will be of interest to people working in cross-cultural business studies, east-west studies, international management, international trust, international business ethics and trust.

Essay from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2, Lappeenranta University of Technology (Business Department), course: International Business Methods, language: English, abstract: The importance of international trade to a nation’s economic welfare and development has been heavily documented in the economics literature since Adam Smiths pioneering inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations. There are several theories under rubric of foreign direct investment (FDI), including the internalization theory. Internalization theory centres on the nation that firms aspire to develop their own internal markets whenever transactions can be made at lower cost within the firm. Internalization theories endeavour to explain how and why the firm engages in overseas activities and in particular how the dynamic nature of such behaviour can be conceptualized (Morgan et al., 1997).

'This is a welcome addition to the body of work on IJV performance. The emphasis on marketing and on S.E. Asia is particularly timely.' - Paul Beamish, University of Western Ontario, Canada Craig Julian argues that the International Joint Venture (IJV) phenomena represents two opposing trends. On the one hand, an analysis of the number of new IJVs reveals that they are becoming increasingly popular as a mode of overseas market entry and expansion. On the other hand, however, the significance of a robust growth trend is overshadowed by the incidence of high failure. The book examines the factors influencing the marketing performance of IJVs in South East Asia, including market characteristics, conflict, commitment, product characteristics, marketing orientation, control, trust, partner's contributions and partner's needs.

This study empirically examines the moderating effects of age and partner trust on the relationship between control mechanisms and perceptions of performance in 129 US-based international joint ventures (IJVs). A reliance on formal control mechanisms and general managers' perceptions of IJV performance were found to be positively related in younger IJVs, but this relationship became negative in more mature IJVs. In addition, social control mechanisms and perceptions of IJV performance were positively related, but only in the presence of affect-based trust between the parents.
