Melalui buku ini, penulis mengajak kita mengunjungi kembali ke masa lalu Tanah Batak secara gamblang dengan berupaya memahami proses-proses yang terjadi di balik teror kekerasan penyebaran agama Islam Mazhab Hambali di Tanah Batak pada 1816-1833. Berbeda dengan sejarawan lain, penulis memilih untuk menuliskan sejarah Batak dengan gaya bertutur (story telling style), yang semula memang ditujukan kepada anak-anaknya. Di sinilah sesungguhnya letak daya tarik buku ini. Ia muncul orisinal karena fokusnya lebih diletakkan pada praktik penciptaan sejarah Batak itu sendiri ketimbang menjajarkan peristiwa-peristiwa kesejarahan naratif seperti praktik sejarawan konvensional selama ini.
