Following, rooting, dedicating oneself to the Packers is unlike any other endeavor, either within sports or in life. They are a team that has never had an owner and operates in a tiny market competing against teams from the biggest markets in the world. For those of us born at a time when our formative years saw the end of a dynasty and ushered in over two decades of agonizing mediocrity, we are among the most devoted of all Packer fans. It's easy to root for a sports team that is always going deep into the playoffs, winning divisions, and demonstrating savvy decisions during draft time. It is quite another when that team is best known for finding ways to lose and invariably making poor decisions off the field. This reality, starting before 1970 and extending beyond 1990, becomes excruciating for someone living fifteen hundred miles away from Green Bay. This is exactly what Tundra Tales seeks to capture. It is a collection of stories about one individual but can find empathy from the legions of the Green and Yellow Nation around the country. It canvasses trying to root for the visiting team when the hosts are less than accommodating. It highlights the world of an NFL fan before the days of cable television, internet access, websites, or social media. It draws from a time of local blackouts, hoping for a twenty-second clip at halftime during Monday Night Football, and when Ray Nitschke and his Packer Report was the equivalent of an HBO miniseries about the team. Tundra Tales reminds us that there is so much more to the game than just the final score.

Uncertain Territories written by Inge E. Boer and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-01 with Law categories.

Tracing and theorizing the concept of the boundaries through literary works, visual objects and cultural phenomena, this book argues against the reification of boundaries as fixed and empty non-spaces that simply divide the world. Expanding on her previous work on gender and Orientalism, Inge Boer takes us into uncertain territories of fashion and art, tourism and travel, skilfully engaging the ambivalence of boundaries, as both protecting and confining, as bringing distinction while existing by virtue of their ability to be transgressed. In her close readings of that boundaries as desert, as frame, as home (or lack of it), Boer shows that boundaries are spaces within, through, and in the name of which negotiations take place. They are not lines but spaces ; neither fixed nor empty but flexible and inhabited. With the publication of this book, Boer’s intellectual legacy stretches beyond her untimely passing. The writings that she left behind can be said to have inaugurated the future of her work, presented in the latter part by several of Boer’s intellectual companions. In their original essays, the contributors elaborate on Boer’s theme of boundaries as spaces where opposition yields to negotiation. Committed to the artefact as cultural stimulant, as the embodiment of thought, their analyses span a multitude of artefacts and media, ranging from literature to photography, to art installation and presentation, to film and song. Fanning out from Boer ‘s central focus – Orientalism – to other places of contestation, boundaries are shown to mediate the relationship between self and other ; they are, ultimately, spaces of encounter.

Human Accomplishment written by Charles Murray and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-10-13 with History categories.

A sweeping cultural survey reminiscent of Barzun's From Dawn to Decadence. "At irregular times and in scattered settings, human beings have achieved great things. Human Accomplishment is about those great things, falling in the domains known as the arts and sciences, and the people who did them.' So begins Charles Murray's unique account of human excellence, from the age of Homer to our own time. Employing techniques that historians have developed over the last century but that have rarely been applied to books written for the general public, Murray compiles inventories of the people who have been essential to the stories of literature, music, art, philosophy, and the sciences—a total of 4,002 men and women from around the world, ranked according to their eminence. The heart of Human Accomplishment is a series of enthralling descriptive chapters: on the giants in the arts and what sets them apart from the merely great; on the differences between great achievement in the arts and in the sciences; on the meta-inventions, 14 crucial leaps in human capacity to create great art and science; and on the patterns and trajectories of accomplishment across time and geography. Straightforwardly and undogmatically, Charles Murray takes on some controversial questions. Why has accomplishment been so concentrated in Europe? Among men? Since 1400? He presents evidence that the rate of great accomplishment has been declining in the last century, asks what it means, and offers a rich framework for thinking about the conditions under which the human spirit has expressed itself most gloriously. Eye-opening and humbling, Human Accomplishment is a fascinating work that describes what humans at their best can achieve, provides tools for exploring its wellsprings, and celebrates the continuing common quest of humans everywhere to discover truths, create beauty, and apprehend the good.

The Sex Lives Of Cannibals written by J Maarten Troost and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-25 with Travel categories.

Fantasized about quitting the 9-5? Walking away from credit card debt and student loans? Think living in the South Pacific for two years sounds like a perfect solution and perhaps even a winning idea for your first novel? Maarten Troost does just that, setting up as a devil-may-care islander while his girlfriend, Sylvia, gets to work on saving the planet, or at least a little part of it on an end-of-the-world atoll, Tarawa. Life on Tarawa resembles not so much paradise as a theatre of the absurd where planes fly with the aid of masking tape, Coconut Stalinism prevails as national government and Sylvia is co-opted by the CIA to spy on the Chinese. But abandoning continental hang-ups like barbequeing the local dogs and watching on as international industrial fishing trawlers plunder the world's richest tuna supply aren't so easy. Perhaps only by following the locals and letting go, one just might find a better way to live...
