Tundra Tales is a story of life in the Far North. As a public health nurse I spent time with the Alaska Natives and as I became acquainted with them, I learned about their dreams and their heartaches, their ambitions and their disappointments, and we became friends. I should like to dedicate this book to the Natives of Interior Alaska, the Inupiat Eskimos and the Athabascan Indians. I became acquainted with, worked among, and learned to love these people. It was a privilege to work and live with these earthy, loving and extraordinary Natives] They shared their joys and sorrows with me, and as we worked together, our lives became inextricably bound together as our goals became the same. The book is an attempt to portray the life I lived with these Natives, and we shared not only the health care provided but we learned about each other, and our friendship grew and broadened, and our understanding grew. So my book is dedicated to the Natives of Alaska, especially those of the Interior. I also am very grateful to Bob Callahan for his assistance in putting this book together. I would never have been able to finish it were it not for his help with format, and with the computer, and with every area in compiling the book. I appreciate his help more than I can ever say. He has been a wonderful teacher. I also want to thank my friend Charles Hugo, for help with the computer. Whenever I got stuck, and something would go wrong he was usually there to help me. So iv for those who made it possible to write my book I am grateful. Some of the names of people I have written about have been changed to protect the privacy of individuals.

But as he drags it home, Putak the polar bear, Aput the arctic fox, and Masak the caribou eye this little lemming’s prize and want it for their own. Tuktuk thinks fast, but can he outwit the other animals and convince them that one furry kamik is no good for anyone bigger than a lemming?

Following, rooting and being dedicated to the Packers is unlike any other endeavor, either within sports or in life. They are a team that has never had an owner and operates in a tiny market competing against teams from the biggest markets in the world. For those of us born at a time when our formative years saw the end of a dynasty and ushered in over two decades of agonizing mediocrity, we are among the most devoted of all Packer fans. It's easy to root for a sports team that is always going deep into the playoffs, winning divisions and demonstrating savvy decisions during draft time. It is quite another when that team is known best for finding ways to lose on the field and invariably making poor decisions off it. This reality, starting before 1970 and going to after 1990, could become excruciating for someone living 1,500 miles away from Green Bay. This is exactly what Tundra Tales seeks to capture. It is a collection of stories about one individual but assuredly can find an empathetic response from the legions of the Green and Yellow Nation around the country. It canvasses trying to root for the visiting team when the hosts are less than accommodating. It highlights the world of an NFL Fan before the days of cable television, Internet access, websites or social media. It draws from a time of local blackouts, hoping for a 20 second clip at halftime of Monday Night Football and when Ray Nitschke and his Packer Report was the equivalent of an HBO mini-series about the team. Tundra Tales reminds us that there is so much to the game than just the final score.

As the first profound anthropological descriptions of that region, the publications of the Jesup North Pacific Expedition, undertaken in the first years of the 20th century, marked the beginning of a new era of research in Russia. Jochelson's work the Yukaghir and the Yukaghirized Tungus, for which he also draws on results of his earlier fieldwork in that area, was an important milestone for Russian and North American anthropology that provides to this day a unique contribution to thoroughly understanding the cultures of northeastern Siberia.
