The decline in public funding for higher education and the consequent adoption of corporate practices by college administrators have produced a number of troubling repercussions, including the reconfiguration of students as consumers, the prioritizing of career training over critical thinking, and the casualisation of academic labor. This dissertation examines what these trends could mean for the future of composition instruction. Historical contexts are provided for both late capitalism's penetration of academia and the evolution of composition from a pragmatic first-year course to a politicized, intellectually engaging field of study. Suggestions are offered to address the corporatized academy's pressure to relegate composition to rigid, skills-based instruction. After examining my own complicity in the labor problems plaguing writing instruction, I call on others working in higher education, English departments, and composition to look within as a necessary step to remedying these issues. Additionally, I point to the need for a cultural shift within society-at-large and academia that would reposition writing and critical thinking as essential ingredients to higher learning, rather than simply serving goals related to the study of literature and professional training. Such a repositioning would necessitate that compositionists write to larger, more inclusive audiences than just the small circles of readers reached by scholarly journals. In terms of composition pedagogy, I recommend excavating the ideological implications of issues that risk fading into an apolitical background in the classroom. Thus, the Internet and the English language---often deemed neutral tools of communication---can be investigated for the ways they might be implicated in the spread of global capitalism. Moreover, I suggest that cultural studies, a popular approach to teaching writing while raising awareness about the problems of consumerism, should itself be situated politically so that students can interrogate the liberal views frequently espoused in composition. Paradoxically, I also recommend that by embracing the pragmatic skills society and administrators demand of college writing courses, composition can satisfy a legitimate student need and continue to evolve as an engaging field of theory and practice.
