Some turtles make great pets, but others do not. So how can people tell the difference? Through accessible text paired with colorful photographs, this book allows beginning readers to explore the world of turtles, taking a close look at the physical attributes that make these slow-moving creatures unique. From their hard shells—called carapaces—to their different kinds of feet, turtles are as varied in physical makeup as they are in temperament. To me, the book describes how people (especially young people) can set goals for themselves and achieve them if they are willing to work hard. Life is hard, and not everyone will support you in your goals. The moral of this story is that it doesn’t matter what other people think. If you work hard at accomplishing those goals, no matter how difficult they may be, then you can accomplish them. This story also shows that if you work hard, it doesn’t always mean that you will win. When Splash comes in second on the final heat, he is disappointed at first. It is only after the crowd starts cheering for him that he realizes what he has accomplished. In the end, it is about proving to himself and others that chasing after your dreams is all that matters. If you truly want something, you have to fight for it and don’t let anyone tell you any different. I also believe that children are often being taught that all you have to do to be successful in sports, school, life, etc. is show up. I believe that children need to be shown that it takes hard work to be successful, and sometimes that hard work may not be good enough, but that you always have to keep fighting for what you want and what you believe in.

The big-headed turtle is known to readily climb over obstacles in and around rivers and fast streams, using its tail as a prop to extend the reach of its strong claws; it also uses its beak to assist in climbing. It has been reported to climb trees and bushes. It is not a strong swimmer, and when swimming, this species occasionally arches its tail in the manner of a scorpion. The big-headed turtle cannot pull its head in its shell. That being the case, it will not hesitate to use its powerful jaws to defend itself. It is a fish and snail eater.

Did you know that the turtle’s top shell is an outgrowth of bone, and the scales on it are made of the same substance that forms our finger nails? Or that its nostrils are placed high on its head so that it can breathe without raising its head far above water? This fascinating book reveals these, and many little-known details about the turtle’s body, inner working, geographical adaptations, genealogy, history, and endangered future.

This volume celebrates the contributions of Dr. Eugene Gaffney to the study of turtles, through a diverse and complementary collection of papers that showcases the latest research on one of the most intriguing groups of reptiles. A mix of focused and review papers deals with numerous aspects of the evolutionary history of turtles, including embryonic development, origins, early diversification, phylogenetic relationships, and biogeography. Moreover it includes reports on important but poorly understood fossil turtle assemblages, provides historical perspectives on turtle research, and documents disease and variation in turtles. With its broad scope, which includes descriptions of material and new taxa from Australia, Asia, and Europe, as well as North and South America, this work will be an essential resource for anyone interested in the morphology and evolution of turtles. “This volume’s breadth of time, geography, and taxonomic coverage makes it a major contribution to the field and a ‘must have’ for all vertebrate paleontologists.”, James F. Parham, California State University, CA, USA “A comprehensive and sweeping overview of turtle evolution by the top experts in the field that will interest everyone curious about these unique reptiles.” Jason S. Anderson, University of Calgary, Canada “An invaluable addition to the literature that covers the full spectrum of approaches toward understanding the evolution of these noble creatures.” Ann C. Burke, Wesleyan University, CT , USA “A truly comprehensive volume that both the student of fossil turtles, as well as the general reader interested in these enigmatic creatures, will find fascinating.” Tyler Lyson, Yale University, CT, USA

From the hefty alligator snapping turtle—the largest freshwater turtle in North America and the only turtle in the world with a predatory lure in its mouth—to the wood turtle, which uses “worm stomping” to catch earthworms, to the lovely ornate box turtle, which closes its shell completely for self-defense, the slow-but-sure turtle is an intriguing reptile. Terry VanDeWalle provides a complete description of each species, both male and female, along with distinguishing characteristics for fourteen subspecies, information about range and habitat, and natural history notes about behavior, hibernation, diet, and nesting. Two panels devoted to hatchlings provide short descriptions of the young of each species as well as photographs of some commonly seen young turtles.
