Versato tanto nelle arti liberali quanto in quelle meccaniche, Baruch Spinoza non fu soltanto filosofo. Molatore di lenti, probabilmente attore di teatro e disegnatore, frequentò la scuola e la bottega antiquaria di Franciscus van den Enden e fu vicino alla società delle arti Nil volentibus arduum. Ad Amsterdam risiedeva non lontano da Rembrandt e Potter e poi si giovò della compagnia di pittori e decoratori presso cui affittava una stanza. Dal cuore del secolo d’oro olandese, la sua filosofia ha spesso ispirato poeti e scrittori, drammaturghi e artisti. Come spiegare uno sguardo non necessariamente filosofico su una filosofia che non presenta un pensiero propriamente articolato sulle arti? Come spiegare che siano state spesso frequentate le vie dell’interpretazione estetica per cercare di penetrare una filosofia che ne è sprovvista? Questo libro esplora da un punto di vista storiografico, storico e filosofico gli aspetti meno noti della biografia, dell’entourage e del pensiero di Spinoza relativamente alle arti. Da esso emerge che lo spinozismo contiene quanto necessario per alimentare una profonda riflessione sulla natura delle arti e sui loro usi all’interno di un progetto etico concepito come arte di vivere.

Le più recenti vicende dell’Italia osservate e vissute da Paolo Savona in qualità di Ministro degli Affari europei e di presidente della Consob sono raccontate in questo nuovo lavoro che si può considerare un’appendice ai due precedenti pubblicati da Rubbettino su La fine del laissez-faire e della liberal-democrazia (2016) e sulle sue Memorialia e moralia di mezzo secolo di storia (2018). La sua interpretazione è che la politica monetaria ha assunto la guida del mercato finanziario, permettendo alla politica fiscale di spingersi oltre i suoi limiti, anche attraverso l’espansione dell’indebitamento pubblico. L’inversione eterodossa delle due politiche si era già delineata dopo la crisi finanziaria globale del 2008, ma ha assunto una chiara connotazione strutturale, forse irreversibile, a seguito dell’esplosione della pandemia sanitaria Covid-19. L’Unione europea e, nel suo ambito, l’Eurosistema hanno recepito e rafforzato i contenuti “non convenzionali” delle due politiche avviate dagli Stati Uniti, muovendo da quella intrapresa dalla Banca centrale europea nel 2012 e integrata quest’anno da quella fiscale con il Recovery fund (Next generation EU); queste decisioni, molto tormentate, rappresentano la vera novità dell’Unione, abbattendo, tra l’altro, l’opposizione alla mutualizzazione del debito tra Stati membri. L’A. ricorda che i due vizi di fondo del Paese sono l’assistenzialismo e il rispetto opzionale della legge e sottolinea il pericolo che il nuovo regime monetario e fiscale, permettendo l’esistenza di moneta e di pranzi gratis, possa impedire che le abbondanti risorse disponibili si indirizzino verso gli investimenti e vadano invece spese in assistenza generalizzata, salvataggi di imprese decotte e riaffermazione delle partecipazioni statali, rivitalizzando le spinte sociali in questa direzione presenti nella cultura del Paese, mai assopitesi. Tenendo conto dei profondi mutamenti epocali in atto, l’A. sollecita la costituzione di una Consulta pubblica di esperti che proponga al governo e al Parlamento un’architettura istituzionale adeguata ad affrontarli e suggerisce le azioni di breve periodo da continuare o intraprendere per raggiungere gli obiettivi strategici scelti.

At the heart of Spinoza's Heresy is a mystery: why was Baruch Spinoza so harshly excommunicated from the Amsterdam Jewish community at the age of twenty-four? In this philosophical sequel to his acclaimed, award-winning biography of the seventeenth-century thinker, Steven Nadler argues that Spinoza's main offence was a denial of the immortality of the soul. But this only deepens the mystery. For there is no specific Jewish dogma regarding immortality: there is nothing that a Jew is required to believe about the soul and the afterlife. It was, however, for various religious, historical and political reasons, simply the wrong issue to pick on in Amsterdam in the 1650s. After considering the nature of the ban, or cherem, as a disciplinary tool in the Sephardic community, and a number of possible explanations for Spinoza's ban, Nadler turns to the variety of traditions in Jewish religious thought on the postmortem fate of a person's soul. This is followed by an examination of Spinoza's own views on the eternity of the mind and the role that that the denial of personal immortality plays in his overall philosophical project.
