The Suite for Horn and Piano (with optional percussion and interpretive dance) is another sonic foray into African mythology, traditions and metaphysics. It's my first in-depth exploration into the versatility of the horn. After all, what other instrument can straddle so regally on the thrones of the woodwinds and the brass families of instruments! Subtitled "Tales of Sango," each of the six movements captures an aspect or variation of the many tales about one of the most feared yet venerable of all Yoruba deities: Sango, the god of Thunder, or as some anthropologists put it, the "Thor" of African mythology.

The idea for the "Three Pieces for Woodwind Trio" was advanced by my friends at the St. Louis-based IMI Chamber Players; to provide a collection of works for smaller ensembles looking for pieces that draw from new worlds of exciting rhythms, melodies and harmonic modes. No. 1 - "Wedding Processional," is loosely based on an Efik/Ibibio (Nigeria/Cameroon) folk tune collected by the great Nigerian musicologist and composer Sam Akpabot. In No. 2 - 'Mshila,' I've repurposed a lullaby collected a long time ago in the Congo/Central African Region. In No. 3 - 'Ayevwiomo' Dance performers perhaps would remember some of the tunes quoted from my "Three Pieces for Flute and Piano," and based on Urhobo (Nigeria) chant and dances to celebrate birth and new beginnings. Collectively, these pieces help assuage the musicians' journey towards new horizons of intercultural appreciation. - Fred Onovwerosuoke http://fredomusic.com

Some of these studies may also be amenable to the lever harp.

"Fanfare" employs various bowing techniques -- spicatto, col legno, sul ponticello and often exaggerated pizzicato -- for the traditional string quartet to immediately become a surrogate for a multi-instrumental ensemble of loud horns, war-drums, dance steps, clanging machetes, and vocal ululation that characterize West African communal dances that have persisted among African-descent peoples in Cuba, Haiti and the Gullah traditions of the South Carolina coast. "Fanfare" is a major rhythmic workout, albeit, one that fine musicians will find worthwhile. It is a brief journey into a vast sanctum of intricate rhythms. It is a celebration of life; of a people's accomplishments, and their hopes and aspirations for the future. Recorded by Invoke String Quartet of Austin, Texas.

African Fanfare for Concert Band, (often simply subtitled "Fanfare for Band") draws from warrior dances of the Urhobo people of Nigeria. A clarion call heralds the new harvest and the beginning of another planting season, immediately transitioning into a sonic surrogate for a multi-instrumental ensemble of loud horns, war-drums, dances, clanging machetes to rhythm, and vocal ululation that characterize West African communal dances that have also persisted among various African-descent communities in Cuba, Haiti and the Gullahs of the South Carolina coast.

African Pianism refers to a style of piano music which derives its characteristic idiom from the procedures of African percussion music as exemplified in bell patterns, drumming, xylophone and mbira music. It may use simple or extended rhythmic motifs or the lyricism of traditional songs and even those of African popular music as the basis of its rhythmic phrases. It is open ended as far as the use of tonal materials is concerned expect that it may draw on the modal and cadential characteristics of traditional music. It’s harmonic idiom may be tonal, atonal, consonant or dissonant in whole, in part, depending on the preferences of the composer, the mood or impressions he wishes to create or how he chooses to reinforce, heighten or soften the jaggedness of successive percussive attacks. In this respect the African composer does not have to tie himself down to any particular school of writing if his primary aim is to explore the potential of African rhythmic and tonal usages. The pieces in this book were written to give the African piano student something with African rhythmic and tonal flavour that may enrich the experience, shape orientation, sense of timing and coordination of rhythmic and tonal events.

This volume of violin duets, and hopefully more to come, will ensure that preeminent names like J.H. Kwabena Nketia, Akin Euba, Joshua Uzoigwe, Halim El-Dabh, Gamal Abdel-Raheem, and many others, are not forgotten. Their existing works deserve study and appreciation alongside other great composers and thinkers. These pieces are offered as additional literature for the large constituent of violinists out there looking for works that are refreshing, nuanced in multiculturalism; works that employ familiar performance techniques to explore new musical and cultural horizons. Finally, as the saying goes, what's good for the violin is also good for other C-instruments; so, hopefully, these works would be repurposed for flute and oboe in future publications. For now, violinists may enjoy!

Britain, long revered for its choral music and partsongs, had largely neglected art songs since the Elizabethan era. The middle of the nineteenth century witnessed efforts to revive the genre, particularly in the works of Sir C. Hubert Parry and Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. The following generation, including the Scottish composer Hamish MacCunn (1868–1916), built on the foundations laid by Parry and Stanford and served as the bridge to the vocal music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir Edward Elgar, Ivor Gurney, John Ireland, and ultimately Benjamin Britten. Though best known for his Scottish-influenced compositions, MacCunn composed over 100 songs that, free from national constraints, are some of the most refined and sophisticated examples of his music. Almost no modern editions of MacCunn’s song exist, though many were published during the composer’s lifetime. The current two-part edition presents the composer’s 102 extant songs. Part 1 contains 53 individual songs; Part 2 presents the songs that were first published as small collections.
