You don't have to be perfect to do God's work. Look no further than the twelve disciples, whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Join bestselling author John MacArthur in Twelve Ordinary Men as he draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original disciples for today's modern disciple, you! Jesus chose ordinary men--fishermen, tax collectors, political zealots--and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from people who were otherwise unremarkable. The twelve disciples weren't the stained-glass saints we imagine. On the contrary, they were truly human, all too prone to mistakes, misstatements, wrong attitudes, lapses of faith, and bitter failure. Simply put, they were flawed people, just like us. But under Jesus' teaching and touch, they became a force that forever changed the world. MacArthur takes you into the inner circle of the disciples--their selection, their training, their personalities, and their incredible impact. As MacArthur took a closer look at the lives of the twelve disciples, he found himself asking difficult questions along the way, including: Why did Jesus pick each of the twelve disciples? How did Jesus teach them everything he could in just eighteen short months? Can the lessons that Jesus taught the disciples can still influence our faith today? In Twelve Ordinary Men, you'll learn that disciples are living proof that God's strength is made perfect in weakness. As you get to know the men who walked with Jesus, you'll see that if he can accomplish his purposes through them, he can do the same through you.

“In the darkness of the night, the nightingale sings with wondrous splendor, A beckoning songbird calling the world to feel peaceful surrender. The nightingale’s beauty lives in the essence of his melodic voice, Leaving listeners disarmed by its power, making sweetness their choice.” From the poem, Splendor in the Night’s Light, D. Ferris Arfaa arouses our awareness that life’s true meaning and effect emanates from our inner beauty, not outward appearance! Furthermore, we are left with the personal choice of whether to receive and surrender to the power of redemption and salvation through Jesus Christ. This book contains poems that reflect on the lives of Jesus and His original Twelve Apostles. The poems carry us from their callings by Jesus into apostleship and, finally, martyrdom. They are intended to spark a personal revival in each of us to answer God’s calling no matter our personal limitations. From the First Nightingale to the Last emphasizes that, like Jesus and His Apostles, we all share a common nature, but we can move beyond our personal shortcomings to a powerful purpose in service to others. The reader cannot fail to be motivated to a new level of living through the power of faith and a relationship with Jesus Christ.

When Jesus was starting His earthly ministry He wanted twelve men to work alongside Him so He chose Twelve Men and made them disciples. They were the chosen. They eventually became His closest followers. None of them were skilled in the way we think about being educated but they had life skills. None of them was religious and they certainly had not studied Emily Post's ideas about etiquette. They were just simple everyday folk and more than likely in their day they would have blended in with the crowd. The one thing they did achieve was that they spearheaded the church movement of the day. The New Testament church flourished under their direction. However, much like you and I they were not without faults. None of them were scholars or teachers but each one learned so much from Jesus that their standing in society was respected then and still is to this day. Each disciple had a unique quality and temperament that represents each of us today. They certainly had no religious experience and did not understand religious writings and that is why they were the chosen. Christ chose them for a reason. He knew each one was radical in his own way to the point they would each go out and change the then known world. In so doing it set the stage for generations to come. God had a design for this world and using these men would accomplish His goal. Each one of them in their own way had an undying love for Christ that was evident in the work they carried on after He left this earth. As we look at each one individually we will see a little bit of ourselves in each one, perhaps even a lot. Either way these men were The Chosen for a reason, to set an example for us.

Many Christians are unable to give the names, or many details, of Jesus’ twelve disciples and yet we can learn many lessons from their lives. Each of them had his own personality but Jesus was able to change and use them in the service of the Kingdom of God. They had faults like we do. They were a mixed bunch of people, each with their own gifts and struggles. God calls all sorts of people, and we cannot forget that Jesus was selecting men for a leadership role in the early church. We can use the example of the apostles to inspire and teach us. This is a tremendously useful book that will have a place on many a minister’s bookshelf. From Andrew through to Judas, Ian Fleck’s survey is detailed but accessible and never dry. This is a timely book, coming at a time when many in the church are speaking of the need for discipleship, yet, all too often, little or nothing is ever said of the first disciples. This book opens up their lives to us. Rev. Dr. Paul Bailie Chief Executive, Mission Africa (Working in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Chad and Kenya) Inspired by material concerning the Twelve disciples which he has assembled from the Four Gospels, and in interaction with other Scripture texts and some ancient traditions, Ian Fleck in this series of meditations has succeeded in deriving, from the lives of Jesus’ choses followers, challenging, inspirational and practical lessons for readers to apply in discipleship of Christ today.
