A searing portrait of suburbia, friendship, and family strained by a devotion to false appearances. In an idyllic suburb, four young families quickly form a neighborhood clique, their friendships based on little more than the ages of their children and a shared sense of camaraderie. When one of the couples, Paige and Gene Edwards, adopt a four-year-old girl from Russia, the group's loyalty and morality is soon called into question. Are the Edwards unkind to their new daughter? Or is she a difficult child with hidden destructive tendencies? As the seams of the group friendship slowly unravel, neighbor Nicole Westerhof finds herself drawn further into the life of the adopted girl, forcing Nicole to re-examine the deceptive nature of her own family ties, and her complicity in the events unfolding around her.

Deliberative Democracy And The Environment written by Graham Smith and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-08-29 with Political Science categories.

Contemporary democracies are frequently criticized for failing to respond adequately to environmental problems and our political institutions are often charged with misrepresenting environmental values in decision-making processes. In this innovative volume, Graham Smith argues that the enhancement and institutionalisation of democratic deliberation will improve reflection on the wide range of environmental values that citizens hold. Drawing on theories of deliberative democracy, Smith argues that institutions need to be restructured in order to promote democratic dialogue and reflection on the plurality of environmental values. Deliberative Democracy and the Environment makes an important contribution to our understanding of the relationship between democratic and green political theory. Drawing on evidence from Europe and the United States, it systematically engages with questions of institutional design.

Bringing together ten leading researchers in the field of deliberative democracy, this important book examines the features of a Deliberative Mini-Public (DMP) and considers how DMPs link into democratic systems. It examines the core design features of DMPs and their role in the broader policy process and takes stock of the characteristics that distinguish them from other forms of citizen participation. In doing so, the book offers valuable insights into the contributions that DMPs can make not only to the policy process, but also to the broader agenda of revitalising democracy in contemporary times.

Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ... THE SILVER CUP Joseph lived for many years in Egypt. He was made the keeper of the prison. God was with him, and whatever he did, God made it to prosper. One day, Pharaoh the king, said to Joseph: "There is none so careful and wise as you are. You shall be over my house, and by your word shall all my people be ruled." Pharaoh took his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand. He clothed him in fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck. He made him to ride in the second chariot which he had. So Joseph was lord over all the land of Egypt. Now, there was in Egypt more food than the people could eat, for the years were plentiful years. But Joseph knew that years of famine would come when the grain would not grow. So he gathered the food of the field, and laid it up in the cities. Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, for it was without number. Then the plentiful years were ended, and the years of dearth began to come. The famine was in all lands. But Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold to the people. All countries came to Egypt to Joseph to buy corn. Now, Jacob said to his sons: "I have heard that there is corn in Egypt. Go down there, and buy for us, that we may live." So Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy corn in Egypt. But Benjamin, Joseph's youngest brother, Jacob sent not. Joseph's brothers came and bowed down themselves before him. Joseph knew his brothers, but they knew not him. Joseph spoke roughly to them and said, "Why are you come?" They said, "To buy food." Joseph said, "You are spies; to see the bareness of the land you are come." They said to him: "No, my lord, but to buy food are we come. We are twelve brothers, the sons of one man. The youngest is this day with our father, and one is not...".

The seven volumes provide, for the first time, complete coverage of qualitative market research practice, written by experienced practitioners, for both a commercial and academic audience. The set fills two important market gaps: it offers commercial practitioners authoritative source texts for training and professional development; and provides students and researchers with an account of qualitative research theory and practice in use today. Each book cross-references others in the series, but can also be used as a stand-alone resource on a key topic. The seven books have been carefully structured so as to be completely accessible in terms of language, use of jargon and assumed knowledge. Experienced market researchers will find the tools to help them critically evaluate their own work. Those new to market research will be provided with a complete map of qualitative market research theory and practice (including brands and advertising theory) and the stimulation to discuss and learn more with tutors and practitioners. Qualitative Market Research will be an invaluable resource for academic and professional libraries, commercial market researchers, as well as essential reading for students in market research, marketing and business studies.

Democratic Innovations written by Graham Smith and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07-02 with Political Science categories.

Can we design institutions that increase and deepen citizen participation in the political decision making process? At a time when there is growing disillusionment with the institutions of advanced industrial democracies, there is also increasing interest in new ways of involving citizens in the political decisions that affect their lives. This book draws together evidence from a variety of democratic innovations from around the world, including participatory budgeting in Brazil, Citizens' Assemblies on Electoral Reform in Canada, direct legislation in California and Switzerland and emerging experiments in e-democracy. The book offers a rare systematic analysis of this diverse range of democratic innovations, drawing lessons for the future development of both democratic theory and practice.
