Excerpt from Twelve Lectures on the Form and Action of the Horse These Twelve Lectures were originally written for The Veterinarian, in which journal they were serially published in the course of the years 1842-3-4. Additional copies of them were struck Off the press at the time of printing: the same are now republished in the present form; the only altera tion they have sustained - were, indeed, capable of sustaining being the addition of some plates of the figures Of horses, the in tention of which is, to exhibit, in outline, the different parts com posing the exterior of the body and limbs Of the animal, to shew their relative situation and connexion, and to throw some light on the various movements resulting from their reciprocity of action. In the absence of any systematic treatise on this com prehensive and inviting subject, it is hoped these Lectures, roughly and runningly sketched as they have been, may induce persons engaged among horses to bestow some re ection and study on a branch of science which too many are apt to suppose comes of necessity to them (as it were through instinct) with the possession of a horse. Moreover, it is conceived that, at a future day, they possibly may prove useful to some writer or lecturer about to undertake the exposition Of the principles upon which the science of external conformation, and its con sequent action, is or ought to be founded. There being no pos sibility Of correcting the sheets composing the work now, the author prefers craving for their errata the indulgence of the reader to the publication of any - which might be a lengthy catalogue Of them. Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses.
