Excerpt from Twenty-Five Bird Songs for Children The success with which Mr. Olds has secured and set a few of these gems of avian music should inspire others of the musical world to undertake a similar quest and to preserve some of the masterpieces of bird-music that apathy and neglect are now allowing to go to waste. Those who combine philosophy with music will find constant interest in study of the evident and very close relationship between bird-mhsic and human music. Not only is this relationship shown in the occasional coincidence of human and avian themes, but still more strikingly is it manifest in the identical rules of construction often governing rhythm, melody, and melodic and harmonic sequence in both. This fact so impressed my very good friend, k/irs. Amelia von Ende, the well-known musical and literary critic, that in a new course of lectures on the history of music, she has, as she recently informed me, ignored all precedent and started with bird-music as one of the sources. Excerpt from A Second Book of Bird Songs for Children Keenly appreciative of the kind words which have greeted the publication of twenty-five Bird Songs for Children, the author is encouraged to add to the list of birds therein treated, this second volume of twenty songs. With the woods, fields and marshes overflowing with suggestive melodies and calls which challenge the musical ear and creative. Imagination, there is no reason why we should not have songs about every bird which has a characteristic song or call - note. Miss Kitty Cheatham writes: Some day we will have great inspirational music when composers go to the right sources for their inspiration. To what source should we go for inspiration as well as actual thematic material for the composition of Bird Songs for Children but the birds themselves, for where else in nature can we find music so like our own both in rhythm and melodic form? Listening In The Field written by Joeri Bruyninckx and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-11 with Science categories.

The transformation of sound recording into a scientific technique in the study of birdsong, as biologists turned wildlife sounds into scientific objects. Scientific observation and representation tend to be seen as exclusively visual affairs. But scientists have often drawn on sensory experiences other than the visual. Since the end of the nineteenth century, biologists have used a variety of techniques to register wildlife sounds. In this book, Joeri Bruyninckx describes the evolution of sound recording into a scientific technique for studying the songs and calls of wild birds and asks, what it means to listen to animal voices as a scientist. The practice of recording birdsong took shape at the intersection of popular entertainment and field ornithology, turning recordings into objects of investigation and popular fascination. Shaped by the technologies and interests of amateur naturalism and music teaching, radio broadcasting and gramophone production, hobby electronics and communication engineering, birdsong recordings traveled back and forth between scientific and popular domains, to appear on gramophone recordings, radio broadcasts, and movie soundtracks. Bruyninckx follows four technologies—the musical score, the electric microphone, the portable magnetic tape recorder, and the sound spectrograph—through a cultural history of field recording and scientific listening. He chronicles a period when verbal descriptions, musical notations, and onomatopoeic syllables represented birdsong and shaped a community of listeners; later electric recordings struggled with notions of fidelity, realism, objectivity, and authenticity; scientists, early citizen scientists, and the recording industry negotiated recording exchange; and trained listeners complemented the visual authority of spectrographic laboratory analyses. This book reveals a scientific process fraught with conversions, between field and laboratory, sound and image, science and its various audiences.
