Excerpt from The Iron Way: A Tale of the Builders of the West The discovery of gold in California aroused the attention of the whole civilized world and caused the migration of vast numbers of people from "the States" to the Pacific Coast. The means of reaching the gold fields were by the long and tedious voyage "around the Horn," by enduring the scarcely lesser hardships of two voyages and overcoming obstacles almost insurmountable in crossing the Isthmus, or by a still more arduous journey of thousands of miles across the continent, traversing great plains, climbing precipitous and rugged mountains, and, parched with thirst, wearily making a journey through desert sands and death valleys, along a forlorn track which may even now be traced by skulls and bones of men and beasts who perished by the way, still whitening in the sun. It is not strange that a people of such enterprise and resources as ours should, under these circumstances, have been impressed with the importance of making a highway across the continent. The Civil War which followed proved the necessity of bringing the people of all sections of the country into closer relations, and made the necessity of building such a highway imperative. Excerpt from Twenty Years in the Wild West: Or, Life in ConnaughtIt is possible that in the following pages I have not been sufficiently explicit regarding the hostility of the Priests to ourselves. It is proper, therefore, to state here as an explana tion of our position as English settlers in Ireland, that almost immediately after our arrival, the denunciation from the altar began.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Conquest Western Classic written by Oscar Micheaux and has been published by e-artnow this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-04 with Fiction categories.

The novel narrates the story of Micheaux, who bears the same name as its famous author, and his struggles to become a successful homesteader in Dakota. Largely autobiographical, the novel provides an insight into the lesser known history of the American Wild West where even the Black pioneers were surviving and fighting against the tough and unforgiving terrain. Read on! Excerpt: "I was born twenty-nine years ago near the Ohio River, about forty miles above Cairo, the fourth son and fifth child of a family of thirteen, by the name of Devereaux—which, of course, is not my name but we will call it that for this sketch. It is a peculiar name that ends with an "eaux," however, and is considered an odd name for a colored man to have, unless he is from Louisiana where the French crossed with the Indians and slaves, causing many Louisiana negroes to have the French names and many speak the French language also. My father, however, came from Kentucky and inherited the name from his father who was sold off into Texas during the slavery period and is said to be living there today. He was a farmer and owned eighty acres of land and was, therefore, considered fairly "well-to-do," that is, for a colored man. The county in which we lived bordered on the river some twenty miles, and took its name from an old fort that used to do a little cannonading for the Federal forces back in the Civil War..."

Romance was not dead in him, and the fire which is built up of clean adventure and the association of strong men and a mighty country had not died out of his veins. He could still see the picturesque, feel the thrill of the unusual, and--at times--warm memories crowded upon him so closely that yesterday seemed today, and Alaska was young again, thrilling the world with her wild call..." Excerpt: "While ranching on the Indian Territory line, close to Caldwell, Kansas, in the winter of '82 and '83, we boys—there being nine of us—made an iron-clad rule that whoever was heard swearing or caught picking grey backs off and throwing them on the floor without first killing them, should pay a fine of ten cents for each and every offense. The proceeds to be used for buying choice literature—something that would have a tendency to raise us above the average cow-puncher..." This carefully crafted ebook: "THE LONG DIM TRAIL” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. A woman with a young son is abandoned by her outlawed husband in the middle of nowhere and that too amidst the Indian uprising. Excerpt: "Everything all right, Limber?" asked Allan Traynor, boss of the Diamond H ranch, as a cowboy with jingling spurs reined his pony before the closed gates of the corral. Doctor Powell, standing beside Traynor, scrutinized the rider, whose broad-brimmed Stetson, caught by the wind, flapped from his face, exposing the sun-brown skin, firm chin and grey eyes. It needed no student of psychology to decide that Limber was not a man who would flinch when facing a six-shooter held by a rustler. The cowboy nodded answer to Traynor's query..." Forrestine C. Hooker was an American author in the early 20th century.
