Wonder Tales From Scottish Myth And Legend consists of sixteen tales from the legends and myths of Scotland. Stories include Beira, Queen Of Winter, The Coming Of Angus And Bride, A Vision Of The Dead, The Princess Of Land-Under-Waves, Exiles From Fairyland, and The Land Of Green Mountains."Dark Beira was the mother of all the gods and goddesses in Scotland. She was of great height and very old, and everyone feared her. When roused to anger she was as fierce as the biting north wind and harsh as the tempest-stricken sea. Each winter she reigned as Queen of the Four Red Divisions of the world, and none disputed her sway. But when the sweet spring season drew nigh, her subjects began to rebel against her and to long for the coming of the Summer King, Angus of the White Steed, and Bride, his beautiful queen, who were loved by all, for they were the bringers of plenty and of bright and happy days. It enraged Beira greatly to find her power passing away, and she tried her utmost to prolong the winter season by raising spring storms and sending blighting frost to kill early flowers and keep the grass from growing."

Much of Scottish mythology was imported by settlers arriving from across the Irish Sea, and so Scottish mythology in large part shares its characters and tales with the mythology of Ireland, from the Ulster Cycle featuring Conchobar mac Nessa, king of Ulster, and the great hero Cúchulainn, to the adventures of Fionn mac Cumhaill. But Scotland also possesses its own folklore and tales featuring kings, water spirits, selkies, sea monsters and fairies, not to mention some Arthurian myths native to this land. From the Gaelic heroism of 'Conall Cra Bhuidhe', tales of fairy folk such as 'The Smith and the Fairies' and the classic ghost story of 'The Fiddler and the Bogle of Bogandoran', to traditional fables ('The Fox and the Wolf') and a tale of unrequited love, murder and rescue ('A Legend of Invershin'), this entertaining collection gathers the ancient myths and fairy tales featuring all manner of creatures into a uniquely Caledonian set of stories. FLAME TREE 451: From mystery to crime, supernatural to horror and myth, fantasy and science fiction, Flame Tree 451 offers a healthy diet of werewolves and mechanical men, blood-lusty vampires, dastardly villains, mad scientists, secret worlds, lost civilizations and escapist fantasies. Discover a storehouse of tales gathered specifically for the reader of the fantastic.

The myths and legends of Scotland are full of what is called "local colour". They afford us not only glimpses of ancient times and of old habits of thought and life, but also of the country itself at different times of the year. Stories like that of Beira and the Bride of Spring. Because so many old stories were passed on orally by storytellers, with the advent of the industrial revolution printed books became more common and these stories became “lost” as less attended the once popular storytelling sessions. Then in 1870 the UK Education Act undertook to teach all children how to read and the art of storytelling all but died out altogether. However in this volume, Donald Mackenzie has saved 16 of these precious remnants of old Scotland and put them into print for us. The stories in this volume are: * Beira, Queen Of Winter * The Coming Of Angus And Bride * Combats That Never End * The Princess Of Land-Under-Waves * Nimble Men, Blue Men, And Green Ladies * Conall And The Thunder Hag * Story Of Finlay And The Giants * Heroes On The Green Isle * A Vision Of The Dead * The Story Of Michael Scott * In The Kingdom Of Seals * Story Of Thomas The Rhymer * The Maid-Of-The-Wave * Exiles From Fairyland * Friends And Foes Of Man * The Land Of Green Mountains The old people believed that somewhere to the West of Scotland, the spirit of Spring had its hiding-place, and they imagined this hiding-place to be a green floating island on which the sun always shone and flowers were always blooming. During the reign of Beira, Queen of Winter, the spirit of Spring, they thought, was always trying to visit Scotland, and they imagined that Beira raised the storms of January and February to prolong her reign by keeping the grass from growing. This volume is sure to keep you enchanted for hours, if only not because of the content, but because of their quality, and will have you and your young wards coming back for more. ============ TAGS: folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, wonder tales, Scottish, scots, scotch, Scotland, myth, legend, Beira, Queen Of Winter, King, Coming of, Angus And Bride, Combats, Never End, Princess Land Under the Waves, Nimble Men, Blue Men, Green Ladies, lady, Conall, Thunder Hag, Finlay, Giants, Heroes, Green Isle, Vision Of The Dead, Michael Scott, story, Kingdom Of Seals, Thomas The Rhymer, Maid-Of-The-Wave, maiden, Exiles, Fairyland, Friend And Foe, Land, Green Mountains

Scotland's rich past and varied landscape have inspired an extraordinary array of legends and beliefs, and in The Lore of Scotland Jennifer Westwood and Sophia Kingshill bring together many of the finest and most intriguing: stories of heroes and bloody feuds, tales of giants, fairies, and witches, and accounts of local customs and traditions. Their range extends right across the country, from the Borders with their haunting ballads, via Glasgow, site of St Mungo's miracles, to the fateful battlefield of Culloden, and finally to the Shetlands, home of the seal-people. More than simply retelling these stories, The Lore of Scotland explores their origins, showing how and when they arose and investigating what basis - if any - they have in historical fact. In the process, it uncovers the events that inspired Shakespeare's Macbeth, probes the claim that Mary King's Close is the most haunted street in Edinburgh, and examines the surprising truth behind the fame of the MacCrimmons, Skye's unsurpassed bagpipers. Moreover, it reveals how generations of Picts, Vikings, Celtic saints and Presbyterian reformers shaped the myriad tales that still circulate, and, from across the country, it gathers together legends of such renowned figures as Sir William Wallace, St Columba, and the great warrior Fingal. The result is a thrilling journey through Scotland's legendary past and an endlessly fascinating account of the traditions and beliefs that play such an important role in its heritage.
