Excerpt from Twenty Years in the Himalaya: With 60 Illustrations and a Map I AM attempting in this book to give to those interested in Mountain Travel and Mountain Exploration, who have not been so luckily placed as myself, some account of the Hindu Koosh and Himalaya ranges. My wanderings cover a period of nineteen years, during which I have not been able to do more than pierce these vast ranges, as one might stick a needle into a bolster, in many places; for no one can lay claim to a really intimate knowledge of the Himalaya alone, as understood in the mountaineering sense at home. There are still a great number of districts which remain for me new ground, as well as the 500 miles of the Himalaya included in Nepal, which, to all intents and purposes, is still unexplored. Francis Younghusband was barely twenty years old when he set out in search of "the true spirit of the Himalayas". Written forty years later, this book takes a retrospective look at the two expeditions he made between 1886 and 1889 for which the Royal Geographic Society awarded him its Gold Medal. The first of these expeditions took him from Peking to Kashmir via a route that was 5,500 kilometers long. In the second, he explored the uncharted Karakoram and Pamir passes. Previously unpublished in Spanish, this work conveys with serenity the passion of his youth and the satisfaction he derived from those vast Himalayan landscapes. The present edition commemorates the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of its author's birth.

"Excellent ... packed with information and interesting anecdotes."--The Washington Post A groundbreaking new look at Himalaya and how climate change is re-casting one of the world's most unique geophysical, historical, environmental, and social regions. More rugged and elevated than any other zone on earth, Himalaya embraces all of Tibet, plus six of the world's eight major mountain ranges and nearly all its highest peaks. It contains around 50,000 glaciers and the most extensive permafrost outside the polar region. 35% of the global population depends on Himalaya's freshwater for crop-irrigation, protein, and, increasingly, hydro-power. Over an area nearly as big as Europe, the population is scattered, often nomadic and always sparse. Many languages are spoken, some are written, and few are related. Religious allegiances are equally diverse. The region is also politically fragmented, its borders belonging to multiple nations with no unity in how to address the risks posed by Himalaya's environment, including a volatile, near-tropical latitude in which temperatures climb from sub-zero at night to 80°F by day. Himalaya has drawn an illustrious succession of admirers, from explorers, surveyors, and sportsmen, to botanists and zoologists, ethnologists and geologists, missionaries and mountaineers. It now sits seismically unstable, as tectonic plates continue to shift and the region remains gridlocked in a global debate surrounding climate change. Himalaya is historian John Keay's striking case for this spectacular but endangered corner of the planet as one if its most essential wonders. Without an other-worldly ethos and respect for its confounding, utterly fascinating features, John argues, Himalaya will soon cease to exist.

"Undulating from intimate portraits to sweeping panoramas, Olivier Föllmi's images are unified by their power to pay tribute to the grandeur, diversity and culture of the Himalayas." -- Food & Travel ?The work of Olivier Föllmi exudes authenticity and spirituality. For more than 40 years, the prize-winning photographer has documented the landscape and peoples of the Himalayas, a region he first got to know on a hiking trip in the 1980s. Captivated by Tibetan culture, people, and their harmonious coexistence with nature, Föllmi returned to the mountain region on numerous occasions -- at times as a mountain guide, at others to live and learn from spiritual leaders in a Buddhist temple. The Himalayas became his destiny, and he became one of the most sensitive and insightful observers of life in Tibet. This rich photo book of the Himalayas is at once a remarkable retrospective and an homage to the Tibetan culture and spirituality which has so defined and characterized Föllmi's life and work. Page after page reveals photographs of extraordinary emotion, color, tradition, and beauty, alongside inspiring anecdotes and stories from the photographer. My Himalaya is an enriching and enlightening book for anyone looking toward a more mindful way of life, as well as for all those interested in photography, trekking, landscape, and Buddhism.

Where Heaven And Mountains Meet written by Olivier Föllmi and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Travel categories.

Deep in the heart of the Himalayas, the ancient kingdom of Zanskar with its Tibetan Buddhist culture is isolated from the outside world by snow for nine months of the year. Olivier Föllmi has made numerous trips to Zanskar over the past twenty years. Journeying across the freezing terrain sometimes proved to be hazardous, even life-threatening; but his fascination for the region led him to return many times. The results of his travels are eloquently revealed in this book of breathtaking colour photographs. Zanskar’s extraordinary landscape, together with portraits of its people, provide a unique glimpse into an existence that is now changing as contact with the modern world increases. Complementing the photographs, delicate watercolours by Rapkar Wangchuk re-create the quintessential images of Tibetan Buddhism. A moving commentary tells the story of the author’s fascination with Zanskar and records the rites and customs of an exceptional society.
