Wierzyłem, że wielka będzie. Ja i moi współpracownicy kreśliliśmy plany, robiliśmy szkice wielkiej Warszawy przyszłości. I Warszawa jest wielka. Prędzej to nastąpiło, niż przypuszczaliśmy. Nie za lat pięćdziesiąt, nie za sto, lecz dziś widzę wielką Warszawę. Gdy teraz do Was mówię, widzę ją przez okna w całej wielkości i chwale, otoczoną kłębami dymu, rozczerwienioną płomieniami ognia, wspaniałą, niezniszczalną, wielką, walczącą Warszawę. I choć tam, gdzie miały być wspaniałe sierocińce – gruzy leżą, choć tam, gdzie miały być parki – dziś są barykady gęsto trupami pokryte, choć płoną nasze biblioteki, choć palą się szpitale – nie za lat pięćdziesiąt, nie za sto, lecz dziś Warszawa broniąca honoru Polski jest u szczytu swej wielkości i chwały. Ostatnie przemówienie prezydenta Warszawy Stefana Starzyńskiego Walcząca Warszawa to nie tylko powstanie. Twierdza Warszawa postawiła się hitlerowcom już w 1939 roku i choć padła, zrobiła olbrzymie wrażenie na najeźdźcach. Nie bronił jej Naczelny Wódz ani najwyżsi dowódcy Wojska Polskiego. Nie bronił jej prezydent Rzeczpospolitej ani polski rząd. Oni uciekli. Nie wspierali jej zdradzieccy zachodni alianci, którzy choć wiedzieli o tajnym protokole paktu Ribbentrop-Mołotow, nie poinformowali o nim strony polskiej, a ich naciski dyplomatyczne nie pozwoliły na powszechną mobilizację polskiego wojska. Wyglądało to tak, jakby ktoś z wyrachowaniem składał Polskę w ofierze na ołtarzu własnych interesów. A jednak Warszawa się broniła, choć poza honorem nie było już czego bronić. Warszawa płonęła, ginęła i pozostawała wielka. Warszawa nie przegrała z Niemcami żadnej potyczki. Skapitulowała z braku żywności i amunicji. Nie wolno nam o tym zapomnieć. Powyższy opis pochodzi od wydawcy.
