This is a study of everyday religious culture in Syria and Palestine in the 18th and 19th centuries (when they were part of the Ottoman Empire). It is a social history, dealing with beliefs and practices that are mostly forgotten or ignored in the region today, but that once occupied the religious mainstream. Contrary to standard theories about religion in the Middle East, this book argues that members of different religious groups participated in a common, overarching religious culture, which was still visible at the beginning of the 20th century.

It is July 384 when Roman officer, Calpurnius Potitus, receives a script from the emperor of Rome that he must take one hundred men with him to Britannia to reinforce the Roman army and protect the population from hostile marauders, especially the Celts from Hibernia who frequently invade the coastlands to murder and capture citizens. After a stunned Calpurnius reluctantly notifies his wife and teenage son, Succat, of the impending upheaval in their lives, he gathers his men and begins a dangerous journey into Britannia where uncertainty awaits. A year after their arrival, all seems surprisingly well until their world comes crashing down without warning. After the Celts invade, capture Succat, and transport him to Ireland to become a slave, Calpurniuss son sets out on a valiant quest to survive that eventually leads him to a monastery on the island of Saint-Honorat. As Succat leaves his old live behind, the abbot assigns him a new name. While Ptraic becomes a man of God committed entirely to the will of the Most Holy Trinity, he rises up to accept his destiny to bring Christianity to the Emerald Isle. Flames at Twilight shares a fascinating tale that celebrates the remarkable journey and life of Saint Patrick.

Revolt Of The Saints written by John F. Collins and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-22 with Social Science categories.

In 1985 the Pelourinho neighborhood in Salvador, Brazil was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the next decades, over 4,000 residents who failed to meet the state's definition of "proper Afro-Brazilianness" were expelled to make way for hotels, boutiques, NGOs, and other attractions. In Revolt of the Saints, John F. Collins explores the contested removal of the inhabitants of Brazil’s first capital and best-known site for Afro-Brazilian history, arguing that the neighborhood’s most recent reconstruction, begun in 1992 and supposedly intended to celebrate the Pelourinho's working-class citizens and their culture, revolves around gendered and racialized forms of making Brazil modern. He situates this focus on national origins and the commodification of residents' most intimate practices within a longer history of government and elite attempts to "improve" the citizenry’s racial stock even as these efforts take new form today. In this novel analysis of the overlaps of race, space, and history, Collins thus draws on state-citizen negotiations of everyday life to detail how residents’ responses to the attempt to market Afro-Brazilian culture and reimagine the nation’s foundations both illuminate and contribute to recent shifts in Brazil’s racial politics.

**Longlisted for the Moore Prize for Human Rights Writing** 'A tragic portrait of a disappearing world, created with passion and literary grace' SALMAN RUSHDIE 'Janine di Giovanni is a humane and persistent witness' HISHAM MATAR 'Profoundly moving' MARK TULLY _______________________ The Vanishing reveals the plight and possible extinction of Christian communities across Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine after 2,000 years in their historical homeland. Some of the countries that first nurtured and characterized Christianity - along the North African Coast, on the Euphrates and across the Middle East and Arabia - are the ones in which it is likely to first go extinct. Christians are already vanishing. We are past the tipping point, now tilted toward the end of Christianity in its historical homeland. Christians have fled the lands where their prophets wandered, where Jesus Christ preached, where the great Doctors and hierarchs of the early church established the doctrinal norms that would last millennia. From Syria to Egypt, the cities of northern Iraq to the Gaza Strip, ancient communities, the birthplaces of prophets and saints, are losing any living connection to the religion that once was such a characteristic feature of their social and cultural lives. In The Vanishing, Janine di Giovanni has combined astonishing journalistic work to discover the last traces of small, hardy communities where ancient rituals are quietly preserved amid 360 degree threats. Full of faith and hope, di Giovanni's riveting personal stories make a unique act of pre-archeology: the last chance to visit the living religion before all that will be left are the stones of the past.

"(Cioran's) statements have the compression of poetry and the audacity of cosmic clowning".--WASHINGTON POST. In TEARS AND SAINTS, Cioran touches on nearly all the themes that would preoccupy the writer over the course of his career. Self-consciously perverse, this collection will fascinate anyone interested in saints, mysticism, philosophy, the history of Christianity, or the ultimate strangeness of the sacred.
