Agnes Elsie Diana Herbert was a writer and big game hunter. The daughter of James Bateman Thorpe, she was born Agnes Elsie Diana Thorpe on the Isle of Man and grew up there. She was privately tutored. With a cousin, she visited the Canadian Rockies, where the two women taught Chinese kitchen workers in mining camps how to cook English-style food; they also tried hunting. In 1906, the two cousins left on a hunting trip to Somaliland. She had one daughter, the novelist Bradda Field. She first married a Mr. Herbert and became a widow some time later. In 1913, she married Archibald Thomas Stewart, a commander in the Royal Navy. Herbert was a member of the Society of Women Journalists, also serving as its vice-chair and later vice-president. She was editor of the Writers' & Artists' Yearbook from 1922 to 1929. In 1931, Herbert was named an officer of the Order of the British Empire.

As to our courage - well, we could only trust we had sufficient to carry us through. We felt we had, and with a woman intuition is everything. If she feels she is not going to fail, you may take it from me she won't. Certainly it is one thing to look a lion in the face from England to gazing at him in Somaliland. But we meant to meet him somehow. Gradually and very carefully we amassed our stores, and arranged for their meeting us in due course. We collected our kit, medicines, and a thousand and one needful things, and at last felt we had almost every thing, and yet as little as possible. Even the little seemed' too much as we reflected on the transport difficulty. We sorted our things most carefully - I longed for the floor-space of a cathedral to use as a spreading-out ground - and glued a list of the contents of each packing-case into each lid. Over the last couple of decades there has been a strong academic interest in how individuals interact with each other while en route. Yet, even if various studies have informed us about present-day realities of travel companionships, we know little about the influence of gender both on these realities, as well as on the discourse in which these are being narrated. This book aims to establish an agenda for the study of companionship in travel writing by offering a collection of new essays which study texts that belong to the broad category of pre-modern and modern travel literature. Chapters explore the differences and similarities in the ways that women and men in the past chose to describe their experiences with, and/or their ideas about companionship, and specifically reveals the influence of gender norms, conventions, restrictions, and stereotypes. This is the first book which looks at the long-term, interdisciplinary, and genuinely international history of gendered discourses on companionship in travel writing. It will be of interest to scholars and students from a wide variety of disciplines, including cultural and social history, as well as cultural, literary, gender, travel, and tourism studies.
