The present two volumes contain the essays and part of the discussions as presented at the conference on Mainstreams in Industrial Organiza tion, held at the University of Amsterdam, 21-23 August 1985. The thema was chosen because the field of studies commonly designated "industrial organization" in the Anglo-Saxon countries, or "market theory" in Continental Europe, has experienced important alterations during the past decade. Partly this reflects changing theoretical views inside the field, in which shifts in the core concepts have occurred and different emphasis is laid on time-honoured views and results. Partly, critical views have been voiced from outside the field. As in all open scientific debate, they have to be weighed and, if necessary, taken into account. Partly also, diver gent developments in thinking between the Anglo-Saxon, European and Japanese areas need to be considered, because both the problems and the ways of approaching them still differ. The variety of views, theori~s and results is testimony to the vitality of this field of economics; variety is generated by the creative endeavours, from which the chaff is being beaten out by critical discussions. That is especially true for the concept of competition itself, which industrial organization economists are debating intensively.

I show how these effects can be distinguished from each other empirically. I use individual-level Nielsen data to analyze the effects of tune-in ads for television shows. I find that the consideration set effect of advertising is significant and large in my data, while other effects of advertising are minor, with important implications for firms' advertising strategies. In the third essay (joint with Bharat Anand), we focus on systematic heterogeneity in firms' valuations. We decompose overall variation in firms' excess values into diversification discount, systematic heterogeneity (firm random effects) and temporary shocks. We find that the magnitude of systematic heterogeneity is large in absolute terms, and large relative to the mean diversification discount. This highlights the importance of understanding the fundamental drivers of such systematic differences in performance, and suggests that the value consequences of diversification (which have attracted a lot of attention in the literature) are relatively minor compared to other systematic determinants of firm value.

This dissertation consists of three essays in the fields of Strategy (Essay One) and Industrial Organization (Essays Two and Three). The first essay investigates the impact that different types of spinoff activity - the exit of incumbent firm employees to intra-industry entrepreneurship - have on the survival probability of the incumbent organization. I propose a theoretical model based on corporate coherence, organizational learning and agency theory, for understanding the spinoff impact. I test the model empirically on a dataset from the US automobile industry and I identify specific types of spinoffs that may be beneficial for the parent by enhancing its survival probability. My results set the foundations for a strategic management theory of spinoff activity. The second essay, coauthored with Julie Holland Mortimer, and Richard Mortimer, investigates empirically the impact that retailer capacity choices have on realized sales in the US video rental industry. We provide estimates of this impact under alternative vertical contracts, and we show that, on average, an additional unit of capacity has a positive impact on sales, with titles taken on the contracts with the highest up-front cost typically having the strongest impact on sales from increased capacity. The third essay, written jointly with Christos Cabolis, Sofronis Clerides and Daniel Senft, addresses the issue of international price discrimination in the book industry. We use data from three countries, the US, the UK and Canada, and we find that general audience books are similarly priced internationally, but textbooks are substantially more expensive in the United States; a disparity that is much more pronounced for commercial publishers than for university presses. We argue that higher US textbook prices reflect the unique status of the textbook as a centerpiece of US college instruction.

This dissertation contains three chapters on topics in industrial organization. Chapter 2 examines the accuracy of the Hypothetical Monopolist Test, a test for market definition which is often used in the legal analysis of mergers. Chapter 3 analyzes the use of market share discounts by firms and the effect of these discounts on profits and consumer welfare. Chapter 4 investigates pricing practices where a service is offered for a fixed fee plus a multipart usage fee. In Chapter 2, the accuracy of the Hypothetical Monopolist Test (HMT) is examined. In applying the test, two separate models are considered. In each model, the true extent of the product market is known. First, the HMT is applied in a linear differentiated demand model with n firms each producing one symmetrically differentiated product. The test consistently underestimates the number of products in the relevant market in this setting. The second model utilizes a quasi-linear utility specification, and I derive conditions under which the number of products in the market is overestimated. Chapter 3 analyzes the practice of a manufacturer offering a discount or rebate to a retailer if the sales of that manufacturer's product achieve certain benchmarks. Using a vertical model with linear differentiated demand, I find that the welfare effects of market share discount plans can often be positive. The optimal market share discount plan is closely approximates the outcome of vertical integration between the manufacturer and the retailer. This constructive vertical integration can eliminate double marginalization and encourage competing manufacturers to decrease their own wholesale prices. As such, when one manufacturer offers a market share discount plan, the prices of all products may fall. In Chapter 4, I examine pricing plans that include buckets of free units, as are common in the wireless telephone industry. A simple demand structure is established which allows for direct comparisons of the profits and consumer welfare under different pricing plans. The free bucket pricing plans are shown to generate the same profits for the monopolist and the same consumer surplus as two-part tariffs, even when multiple plans are offered to consumers.
