German Classicism is a powerful architectural force that is only now being fully studied. As this extensively illustrated book shows, palaces, private houses, public buildings, and urban planning all received patronage on a scale that could not be paralleled in other countries. Of the host of architects whose genius was given such superb opportunities in the years 1740 to 1840, only Karl Freidrich Schinkel's name has become widely known; yet this book points out, all over Germany rulers were dramatically transforming their capitals, and the achievements of Weinbrenner at Karlsruhe, Moller at Darmstadt, or Klenze at Munich are by any standards astonishing. The first part of the book is by David Watkin, a leading British authority on the Classical Revival. He provides a historical account that sets German Neoclassicism in its regional and political context, and notes the impact of France and England and the Franco-Prussian style before Schinkel. He discusses Schinkel's own work, that of Leo von Klenze, and Neoclassicism in North and South Germany. The book's second part consists of an index of buildings prepared by Tilman Mellinghoff. Here every important Neoclassical building (both existing and destroyed) is listed and described under its location. The index is an invaluable source of information available nowhere else in English. David Watkin is a Fellow of Peterhouse and a University Lecturer in History of Art at Cambridge University. Tilman Mellinghoff is an Assistant Lecturer at the Universities of Cologne and Bonn.

The German Architecture Annual, published by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt am Main, has been documenting the architectural events taking place in Germany for almost 40 years. This year's annual presents a number of interviews with distinguished authors who discuss 22 buildings in Germany shorlisted by a jury for the DAM Prize for Architecture in Germany 2018. In order to make this selection, curators of the museum as well as prominent architects and architecture critics visited around 100 buildings that were nominated for this year's award. The 2018 edition of the annual presents the shortlisted works in greater detail in addition to giving special recognition to the winner of the DAM Prize. The Elbphilharmonie, being an exceptional project, was not eligible for the award but receives a special mention. Excerpt: ...philosophical power of the Germans manifested itself in their architectural work in any phase of more thoughtful design; the typical Frenchman of any culture is an artist born rather than made, while the typical German, like the Englishman, is perhaps too frequently neither the one nor the other. But, be all this as it may, the result of the war certainly was to confer upon the united German nation a new sense of leadership; and the effect of this has naturally made its appearance, amongst other things, in architecture. In two words, German artistic building may be said to have become much more powerful and much more elegant. The increase of power may be simply traced to an advanced sense of importance: the improvement in elegance is still to be attributed to the influence of France. If before the war France had been dependent upon Germany for guidance in art, it is perhaps not too much to suppose that the indignant sense of defeat would have led her architects to repudiate the accustomed guidance at whatever sacrifice; but there was no such difficulty on the other side. It had been the habit to keep an eye on French work for the sake of artistic profit, and obviously there was no reason why that course should not be continued; the feeling of martyrdom was with "our friends the enemy." The German edition of the Parisian Architecture has consequently produced in the great towns during the last twenty years a profusion of very elegant and stately edifices, most notably in Vienna and Berlin. The illustrations No. 248rt and 2486 give a very fair, and a very favourable idea of the German architecture of the passing day. That the graces of proportion in detail which are so characteristic of similar work in France are to be discovered...
