This book introduces the method of lower and upper solutions for ordinary differential equations. This method is known to be both easy and powerful to solve second order boundary value problems. Besides an extensive introduction to the method, the first half of the book describes some recent and more involved results on this subject. These concern the combined use of the method with degree theory, with variational methods and positive operators. The second half of the book concerns applications. This part exemplifies the method and provides the reader with a fairly large introduction to the problematic of boundary value problems. Although the book concerns mainly ordinary differential equations, some attention is given to other settings such as partial differential equations or functional differential equations. A detailed history of the problem is described in the introduction. Key features: - Presentation of the fundamental features of the method - Actual construction of lower and upper solutions in problems - Working applications - Illustrate theorems by examples - Description of the history of the method - Bibliographical notes Key features: - Presentation of the fundamental features of the method - Actual construction of lower and upper solutions in problems - Working applications - Illustrate theorems by examples - Description of the history of the method - Bibliographical notes

Elementary yet rigorous, this concise treatment explores practical numerical methods for solving very general two-point boundary-value problems. The approach is directed toward students with a knowledge of advanced calculus and basic numerical analysis as well as some background in ordinary differential equations and linear algebra. After an introductory chapter that covers some of the basic prerequisites, the text studies three techniques in detail: initial value or "shooting" methods, finite difference methods, and integral equations methods. Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems are treated with all three techniques, and shooting is applied to generalized or nonlinear eigenvalue problems. Several other areas of numerical analysis are introduced throughout the study. The treatment concludes with more than 100 problems that augment and clarify the text, and several research papers appear in the Appendixes.

Modeling And Analysis Of Modern Fluid Problems written by Liancun Zheng and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-26 with Science categories.

Modeling and Analysis of Modern Fluids helps researchers solve physical problems observed in fluid dynamics and related fields, such as heat and mass transfer, boundary layer phenomena, and numerical heat transfer. These problems are characterized by nonlinearity and large system dimensionality, and 'exact' solutions are impossible to provide using the conventional mixture of theoretical and analytical analysis with purely numerical methods. To solve these complex problems, this work provides a toolkit of established and novel methods drawn from the literature across nonlinear approximation theory. It covers Padé approximation theory, embedded-parameters perturbation, Adomian decomposition, homotopy analysis, modified differential transformation, fractal theory, fractional calculus, fractional differential equations, as well as classical numerical techniques for solving nonlinear partial differential equations. In addition, 3D modeling and analysis are also covered in-depth. - Systematically describes powerful approximation methods to solve nonlinear equations in fluid problems - Includes novel developments in fractional order differential equations with fractal theory applied to fluids - Features new methods, including Homotypy Approximation, embedded-parameter perturbation, and 3D models and analysis

Developed during ten years of teaching experience, this book serves as a set of lecture notes for an introductory course on numerical computation, at the senior undergraduate level. These notes contain the material that can be covered in a semester, together with a few optional sections for additional reading. Rather than surveying a large number of algorithms, the book presents the most important computational methods and emphasizes the underlying mathematical ideas. In most chapters, graphs and drawings are relied on, to build up intuition. The notes are written in a rather colloquial style, presenting the subject matter in the same form as it can be explained in a classroom. For instructors, this will minimize the amount of effort required to prepare their blackboard presentations. As prerequisites, the book only relies on standard calculus, an introductory course on matrices, and some basic computer programming skills. As a new feature, these notes are supplemented by two sets of videos from the author's Youtube channel. These videos contain a complete set of live lectures given in Spring 2015, together with a complete set of short tutorials, from 5 to 15 minutes each.A set of homework problems is included at the end of each chapter. Homework projects cover a variety of applications, in connection with population dynamics, engineering, mechanics, image reconstruction, etc. A complete set of solutions is available for instructors, upon request.

The last fifty years have witnessed several monographs and hundreds of research articles on the theory, constructive methods and wide spectrum of applications of boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations. In this vast field of research, the conjugate (Hermite) and the right focal point (Abei) types of problems have received the maximum attention. This is largely due to the fact that these types of problems are basic, in the sense that the methods employed in their study are easily extendable to other types of prob lems. Moreover, the conjugate and the right focal point types of boundary value problems occur frequently in real world problems. In the monograph Boundary Value Problems for Higher Order Differential Equations published in 1986, we addressed the theory of conjugate boundary value problems. At that time the results on right focal point problems were scarce; however, in the last ten years extensive research has been done. In Chapter 1 of the mono graph we offer up-to-date information of this newly developed theory of right focal point boundary value problems. Until twenty years ago Difference Equations were considered as the dis cretizations of the differential equations. Further, it was tacitly taken for granted that the theories of difference and differential equations are parallel. However, striking diversities and wide applications reported in the last two decades have made difference equations one of the major areas of research.
