Landscape With Two Saints written by Lisa M. Bitel and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-19 with Religion categories.

Lisa Bitel uses the history of two unique holy women--Genovefa of Paris (ca. 420-509) and Brigit of Kildare (ca.452-524)--to reveal how ordinary Europeans lived through Christianization at the dawn of the Middle Ages. Most converts did not have a sudden epiphany, Bitel argues. Instead they learned and lived their new religion in continuous conversation with preachers, saints, rulers, and neighbors. Together, they built their faith over many years, brick by brick, into their churches and shrines, cemeteries, houses, and even their markets and farms.

Two Saints written by Arun Shourie and has been published by HarperCollins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-10 with Religion categories.

The life of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa 'enables us to see God face to face', Gandhiji wrote. Similarly, when someone in his circle was distraught, the Mahatma sent him to spend time at the Ashram of Ramana Maharshi. The Paramahamsa and the Maharshi have been among the greatest spiritual figures of our country. They have transformed the lives of and have been a solace to millions. Their peak, mystic experience is what we yearn to have. But what if several of the experiences they had occur in other circumstances also? With the rigour and painstaking research that mark all his work, Shourie probes the lives of two of India's greatest spiritual masters in the light of the breath-taking advances in neuroscience as well as psychology and sociology. The result is a book of remarkable vigour: an examination - and ultimately reconciliation - of science and faith as also of seemingly antagonistic, irreconcilable worldviews.

28 Artists 2 Saints written by Joan Acocella and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-02-12 with Literary Collections categories.

Here is a dazzling collection from Joan Acocella, one of our most admired cultural critics: thirty-one essays that consider the life and work of some of the most influential artists of our time (and two saints: Joan of Arc and Mary Magdalene). Acocella writes about Primo Levi, Holocaust survivor and chemist, who wrote the classic memoir, Survival in Auschwitz; M.F.K. Fisher who, numb with grief over her husband’s suicide, dictated the witty and classic How to Cook a Wolf; and many other subjects, including Dorothy Parker, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Saul Bellow. Twenty-Eight Artists and Two Saints is indispensable reading on the making of art—and the courage, perseverance, and, sometimes, dumb luck that it requires.

The Development Of The Italian Schools Of Painting written by Charlotte Van Marle and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-29 with History categories.

With the sudden and immature death of the Author, this work, which was planned to comprise 2I volumes has had to end with the I8th. From a number of students and art critics requests have reached the publisher and myself that an index should be made of the volumes which have been published. Herein their desire has been satisfied. This general index is divided into two parts: one for names of places, so that with the greatest ease and without loss of time the student can find all the Italian paintings from early Christian times up to the end of the Quattrocento, which are scattered throughout the churches, galleries and private collections of Europe and America. For the larger towns the material is divided into the following headings: I Churches and Monasteries. II Public Collections. III Public Buildings and Streets. IV Private Collections. and this order, though not indicated, has always been followed for the smaller localities. The second division contains the names of artists, each one accom panied by dates and where possible an indication of the site of his activity. The chief aim of this index is to make it easier to consult the enormous amount of material treated in the I8 volumes. For the traveller who desires to know what paintings are to be found in any town this index should be a valuable vade-mecum.
