Excerpt from Two Sermons of April, 1865 I Samuel XI. 12, 13, 14, 15. "And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? Bring the men, that we may put them to death. And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this clay: for to-day the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel. Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal: and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace-offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly." At the period to which these words refer, they were having about such a time in the land of Canaan as we are having in our own country now. It was the clearing off after a storm. The person regularly appointed to administer the government had been rejected by a portion of the people. Providence had employed the scourge of war to bring them to terms. A victorious battle produced a political reaction in the hearts of the disaffected. An impassioned loyalty, in the most sudden manner, as if by a miracle, seized possession of every heart. They repaired to Gilgal and "renewed the kingdom," amid religious sacrifices, and fervent public rejoicings. It is our privilege to participate in a similar scene on a far larger scale. Excerpt from Two Sermons Preached in the Church of the Unity: April 23, 1865 In 1809, in a little village in Kentucky, beneath the thatched roof of a poor man's cottage, was born a child, whose prospects for the future seemed very limited. He received from his parents nothing but poverty and a good name. His childhood was in no degree remarkable. There were no foreshadowings of the greatness to be achieved; and very few of those traditions of wonderful precocity, which, in some mysterious way, cluster about every eminent name. His library consisted of a well thumbed Bible and his fortune, of an empty purse. He passed the first thirty years of his life upon that monoto nous plane on which every poor farmer's boy lives. He spent his days in driving the team afield, in caring for the little flock as it wound slowly o'er the lea, and in the common drudgery which marks the lowly position he occupied. When he Was on the threshold of middle life, a resi dent of a village in Illinois, he was intrusted with some Slight responsibility by his fellow-citizens. He was re garded with kindness because he had been something of a traveller, and an observer of men and things, - having made a voyage down the lordly Mississippi; and because he had given his services to the Government in the black-hawk War, and shown no lack of courage, but rather a quiet persistency and fearlessness, which added to the lustre of the shoulder-straps which made him a captain. Having served his constituents faithfully in a minor position, he began that slow and toilsome journey of promotion, which is marked at every step by honesty of purpose, and which ended when, obedient to the will of the North, he modestly assumed the position of President of the United States. Excerpt from Personal Forgiveness and Public Justice: A Sermon Preached in the Mercer Street Presbyterian Church, New York, April 23, 1865 "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." - Romans xii. 19. "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers; for there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God; and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation." - Romans xiii. 1, 2. In directing your attention to these two distinct sentiments of Holy Writ, a few preliminary statements will further the end we have in view, and will make their application more apparent. In times like these, the public good demands that the light of God's word shall he thrown clearly upon the amazing succession of events which commands the attention of men. We listen to the voices of those who stand in places of power; we read the carefully-prepared editorials of the public journals, and to a large degree our opinions are moulded by the influences which these organs exert upon us. Excerpt from The National Bereavement: A Sermon on the Death of Abraham Lincoln, Delivered April 23, 1865, in the Presbyterian Church, Newburgh In the present discourse I do not intend to draw a parallel be tween this king and the lamented President - two great rulers who were cut down in the mid-day of their glory - for in the one case we have only the judgement of men, but in the other the unerring decision'of God in his revealed word. In the death of both, however, and the deep sensation produced thereby, there is something in common, and much for instruction and warning. Excerpt from Sermon on the Occasion of the Death of President Lincoln: Preached in the South Baptist Church, Hartford, Conn;, Sunday, April 16, 1865 Oh, friends, on the evening Of Good Friday, the memorial day Of the crucifixion of our Lord, our good, true-hearted, magnanimous, supremely loyal, great President was smitten down by the hand Of the assassin; and yester morn, at twenty-two.min utes past seven Of the clock, his noble and holy soul went up from its shattered and desecrated taberna cle to its God. The terrible tragedy is consummated, its heart rending denoument has transpired, there can be no revision Of it, it stands the blackest page save one in the history of the world. It is the after-type of the tragedy which was accomplished on the first Good Friday, more than eighteen centuries ago, upon the eminence of Calvary in J udea. Excerpt from Three Sermons Preached in the North Congregational Church: New Bedford, Mass Fast Day, April 13, and Sunday, April 16, 1865 I had intended, notwithstanding the character of this day as a day of penitence, to congratulate you upon the recent glorious victories of our arms. I had proposed to compare the present and the past. But yesterday's intimation of the President, that he will soon issue his call for a day of national thanksgiving, causes me to defer such an expression. Wait for that thanksgiving a little longer: you have patiently waited four weary years already, and now, every week is a week of new triumphs. Our warfare is well nigh accomplished; our iniquity is well nigh expiated. The double punishment for our sins, is almost closed. Then will I speak comfortably to Jerusalem. But before that day comes, let us look once more at our eventful illustrations of the truth that national sin must have its expiation in national suffering. Well nigh accomplished. The sin is nearly expiated and forgiven, -for that is the real meaning of the words. Soon, now. The roar of cannon, and the rattle of musketry are soon to cease. The sabre and the bayonet shall flash no more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
