A Union soldier and Confederate lady at Vicksburg, 1863 This unique book offers two entirely different views of the important and pivotal siege of Vicksburg during the American Civil War. Grant, in command of the Army of Tennessee crossed the Mississippi and drove Pemberton's Confederate forces into defensive positions about Vicksburg and then put the city under siege. The action was fought between May and July, 1863 and resulted in a Confederate defeat which, together with Lee's defeat at Gettysburg, is generally considered to be a turning point in the war that led to the re-establishment of the union of states. This book, however, does not concern itself with momentous events or the machinations of grand tacticians, instead it looks at the siege from the perspectives of two, quite different, individuals. One is a resident of the besieged city, a woman of Confederate sympathies, who gives a moving and often gruelling account of what it was like to live under the constant Union Army assault. Many of the civilian population were forced to adopt a troglodyte existence by the continual assaults and Mary Loughborough's account brings the times into sharp focus. The second account here comes from the pen of a Union soldier on the other side of the battle-lines. Vicksburg was no 'easy nut to crack' and Federal losses were heavy, so this is an account from the sharp end of war. Desperate battle for the end of the line and the turn of the flank In early July of 1863, the opposing armies of the Confederacy and the Union were inexorably drawn together for battle around the town of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. Initially the tactical advantage appeared to be with the advancing Lee, but an outstanding defence from the first Union troops into action, combined with delays and procrastination among the Confederate command, enabled Meade's forces to take up strong defensive positions on rising ground. Nevertheless, Lee determined to engage in a potentially overwhelming assault, which, if successful, would open an invasion of the North and might pressure an end to the civil war. So began the momentous battle which would define the entire conflict. All commanders seek to turn the enemy flank, and, sitting upon a hill, one end of the Union Army line was destined to become famous in military history for the desperate bravery of those who assaulted it and the equally tenacious courage of those who defended it. This is the story of Little Round Top, a fascinating episode, and a battle within a battle, which immortalised the commanders, men and regiments of both sides who fought and died there. This unique Leonaur edition which includes contributions by several authors contains many useful maps and illustrations. Here an eyewitness accounts--many available for the first time in decades--by generals, journalist, and ordinary foot soldiers, both blue and gray, who relive the conflict in all its terrible glory. Each volume brings you a human perspective on the war--its most decisive battles, its most remarkable personalities. Gettysburg: Two Eyewitness Accounts is American history at its finest--and a reading experience you will never forget. In some ways it epitomized the entire war: three hot days in July filled with missed opportunities, great courage, inconsistent leadership, and horrific, relentless carnage. In rare volume we see the battle from both sides, as experienced by two very different combatants, one Union and the other Confederate. From Little Round Top to Devil's Den to Pickett's Charge, Lt. Frank A. Haskell and Col. William C. Oates, one in a meticulous hindsight and the other still feverish with war, re-create three days that changed American history. Here are the momentous decisions of Lee, Longstreet, and Meade. Here are the fatal maneuverings of the forces in the field. And here, in descriptions unmatched in Civil War literature, is all the heartbreak and triumph of Gettysburg.

For good reason, the second and third days of the Battle of Gettysburg have received the lion's share of attention from historians. With this book, however, the critical first day's fighting finally receives its due. After sketching the background of the Gettysburg campaign and recounting the events immediately preceding the battle, Harry Pfanz offers a detailed tactical description of events of the first day. He describes the engagements in McPherson Woods, at the Railroad Cuts, on Oak Ridge, on Seminary Ridge, and at Blocher's Knoll, as well as the retreat of Union forces through Gettysburg and the Federal rally on Cemetery Hill. Throughout, he draws on deep research in published and archival sources to challenge many long-held assumptions about the battle.

This “very satisfying blow-by-blow account of the final stages of the Gettysburg Campaign” fills an important gap in Civil War history (Civil War Books and Authors). Winner of the Gettysburg Civil War Round Table Book Award This fascinating book exposes what has been hiding in plain sight for 150 years: The Gettysburg Campaign did not end at the banks of the Potomac on July 14, but deep in central Virginia two weeks later along the line of the Rappahannock. Contrary to popular belief, once Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia slipped across the Potomac back to Virginia, the Lincoln administration pressed George Meade to cross quickly in pursuit—and he did. Rather than follow in Lee’s wake, however, Meade moved south on the east side of the Blue Ridge Mountains in a cat-and-mouse game to outthink his enemy and capture the strategic gaps penetrating the high wooded terrain. Doing so would trap Lee in the northern reaches of the Shenandoah Valley and potentially bring about the decisive victory that had eluded Union arms north of the Potomac. The two weeks that followed resembled a grand chess match with everything at stake—high drama filled with hard marching, cavalry charges, heavy skirmishing, and set-piece fighting that threatened to escalate into a major engagement with the potential to end the war in the Eastern Theater. Throughout, one thing remains clear: Union soldiers from private to general continued to fear the lethality of Lee’s army. Meade and Lee After Gettysburg, the first of three volumes on the campaigns waged between the two adversaries from July 14 through the end of July, 1863, relies on the official records, regimental histories, letters, newspapers, and other sources to provide a day-by-day account of this fascinating high-stakes affair. The vivid prose, coupled with original maps and outstanding photographs, offers a significant contribution to Civil War literature. Named Eastern Theater Book of the Year byCivil War Books and Authors
