"Zimmerman's work includes some stories that are ?[among] the best that literature can offer." Antonio Zavala, journalist and author of Pale Yellow Moon. Two ways, two stories making one. The first text is a Jewish- American tragi-comedy, dealing with the rise and fall of Sam Weisman, a New Jersey restaurant owner whose gambling addiction leads to a break with family members and forces his departure from his hometown and business on a one-way trip to L.A. The second is a coming of age narrative, as Sam's son Mel takes his own road from New England to L.A. and the San Francisco Bay area, seeking friends and lovers until he finds a way that for him marks and makes all the difference. Representing countless Jewish-Americans and others who moved from the east coast to California in the 1950s and 60s, this book includes characters, incidents and insights that evoke a past period and project readers to our living present.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of Small Great Things and A Spark of Light comes a “powerful” (The Washington Post) novel about the choices that alter the course of our lives. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY MARIE CLAIRE Everything changes in a single moment for Dawn Edelstein. She’s on a plane when the flight attendant makes an announcement: Prepare for a crash landing. She braces herself as thoughts flash through her mind. The shocking thing is, the thoughts are not of her husband but of a man she last saw fifteen years ago: Wyatt Armstrong. Dawn, miraculously, survives the crash, but so do all the doubts that have suddenly been raised. She has led a good life. Back in Boston, there is her husband, Brian, their beloved daughter, and her work as a death doula, in which she helps ease the transition between life and death for her clients. But somewhere in Egypt is Wyatt Armstrong, who works as an archaeologist unearthing ancient burial sites, a career Dawn once studied for but was forced to abandon when life suddenly intervened. And now, when it seems that fate is offering her second chances, she is not as sure of the choice she once made. After the crash landing, the airline ensures that the survivors are seen by a doctor, then offers transportation to wherever they want to go. The obvious destination is to fly home, but she could take another path: return to the archaeological site she left years before, reconnect with Wyatt and their unresolved history, and maybe even complete her research on The Book of Two Ways—the first known map of the afterlife. As the story unfolds, Dawn’s two possible futures unspool side by side, as do the secrets and doubts long buried with them. Dawn must confront the questions she’s never truly asked: What does a life well lived look like? When we leave this earth, what do we leave behind? Do we make choices . . . or do our choices make us? And who would you be if you hadn’t turned out to be the person you are right now?

Eve East and West of Eden two is the story of a woman who was born in Iran but grew to adulthood through the cultures of Europe and the United States while never fully surrendering her Persian heritage. She became successful in business and has returned with her daughter to the Middle East in search of a wholeness which can embrace the best of each culture she has adopted. In her search for authenticity as a woman, as a citizen of the world, as a daughter, as a mother , she generalizes her own experience to lay it over the experience of the planet entering the Twenty-first century. In the Middle East she finds the rich soil for discovering spiritual healing and loving perspective, while never quite attaining the peace she, and all humankind, spends a lifetime pursuing. There is much in her story about her journey to reclaim her heritage to connect to her roots.in the stifling male dominated societies. In the mites of all she finds the destiny plays upper hand when she find herself irresistibly connected to her roots to farsi language of her childhood and to a soul mate from the past who help her to save himself through saving her in this life .. Where she accepts to transform her thought from the tragic of Mideast mistrust to trust and surrender in hope for common ground between Persia and America for peace. Among the patterns she weaves are the threads of hope for her daughter and through her, hope for the children of the world who will inherit the next opportunity for planetary healing

Burned Bridge written by Edith Sheffer and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-01 with History categories.

The building of the Berlin Wall in 1961 shocked the world. Ever since, the image of this impenetrable barrier between East and West, imposed by communism, has been a central symbol of the Cold War. Based on vast research in untapped archival, oral, and private sources, Burned Bridge reveals the hidden origins of the Iron Curtain, presenting it in a startling new light. Historian Edith Sheffer's unprecedented, in-depth account focuses on Burned Bridge-the intersection between two sister cities, Sonneberg and Neustadt bei Coburg, Germany's largest divided population outside Berlin. Sheffer demonstrates that as Soviet and American forces occupied each city after the Second World War, townspeople who historically had much in common quickly formed opposing interests and identities. The border walled off irreconcilable realities: the differences of freedom and captivity, rich and poor, peace and bloodshed, and past and present. Sheffer describes how smuggling, kidnapping, rape, and killing in the early postwar years led citizens to demand greater border control on both sides--long before East Germany fortified its 1,393 kilometer border with West Germany. It was in fact the American military that built the first barriers at Burned Bridge, which preceded East Germany's borderland crackdown by many years. Indeed, Sheffer shows that the physical border between East and West was not simply imposed by Cold War superpowers, but was in some part an improvised outgrowth of an anxious postwar society. Ultimately, a wall of the mind shaped the wall on the ground. East and West Germans became part of, and helped perpetuate, the barriers that divided them. From the end of World War II through two decades of reunification, Sheffer traces divisions at Burned Bridge with sharp insight and compassion, presenting a stunning portrait of the Cold War on a human scale.

The Outback—so called because it is literally out the back of all major cities in Australia—has been the setting of many of Australia’s exported culturally defining stories and cinematography. Cattle stations or ranches in the Outback provide ample settings for tales to be dreamed up and shared through poem, song, and story. Two Years in Australia’s Wild West explores one man’s journey into this famed landscape. In this entertaining memoir, author, D. Alexander Steel shares the often harsh, and sometimes amusing, ways life can take us to unexpected but necessary places. Travel from Adelaide to the extreme and wild western edges of the Australian continent via sometimes humorous, sometimes serious vignettes. This book examines a young man’s coming of age and discusses the myriad ways God intervenes to help us grow into the people we’re meant to become. Through tales of brotherhood, family, and friends, be reminded that we each have a role in God’s grand design; it might just take a bit of wandering to find the way.
