How do we group different subjects on a variety of variables? Should we use a classification procedure in which only the concepts are classified (typology), one in which only empirical entities are classified (taxonomy), or some combination of both? In this clearly written book, Bailey addresses these questions and shows how classification methods can be used to improve research. Beginning with an exploration of the advantages and disadvantages of classification procedures including those typologies that can be constructed without the use of a computer, the book covers such topics as clustering procedures (including agglomerative and divisive methods), the relationship among various classification techniques (including the relationship of monothetic, qualitative typologies to polythetic, quantitative taxonomies), a comparison of clustering methods and how these methods compare with related statistical techniques such as factor analysis, multidimensional scaling and systems analysis, and lists classification resources. This volume also discusses software packages for use in clustering techniques.

The book's objective is to explore the challenge of thinking methodically - in a theoretically and empirically informed way - about alternative forms of capitalism. What are the most effective ways to conceptualize the existing models of capitalism that have captured the public imagination and are currently floating around in the public debate? How can one mobilize empirical analysis and theory in thinking about the realm of possibilities and about the future of economic order, but avoid the twin perils of scientism and historicism? This book is an attempt to respond to these and related challenges. First, it delves into the substantive aspect of the debate, taking a closer look at a set of particular forms and models of capitalism that are currently discussed both in mass media and in academic circles as plausible, or at least possible, alternatives to the status quo: Crony, State, Regulatory, and Entrepreneurial Capitalisms. By elaborating and clarifying those models, it engages in a heuristic exercise that leads to a better understanding of the task of conceptualizing and assessing, in a theoretically informed way, the diversity of forms of capitalism. Second, the book takes a step further, looking at the epistemic, theoretical and methodological dimensions of the discussion: What is involved, more precisely, in our classifying and theorizing of capitalist systems and their historical evolution? Can psychological factors effectively predict entrepreneurial performance? Drawing upon studies of over 700 entrepreneurial subjects in 10 different samples, Miner settles the issue: yes, they can. He identifies four kinds of people who are capable of achieving entrepreneurial successbut notes that to actually achieve success, they must follow a career route that fits their personalities. Miner's new book is thus a detailed scholarly report on an extensive 20-year research program that focuses on psychological predictors of entrepreneurial activity and success, and a carefully devised, solidly grounded theory to explain why his observations are true. He also discusses the implications for personal career development, entrepreneur selection, entrepreneurship development programs, the assessment of entrepreneurial talent, and related topics crucial not only to entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs themselves, but to their various stakeholders including those with investments in them. Part I of the book reviews the typologies used in the entrepreneurship literature and the various opinions on the value of psychological factors in predicting entrepreneurial success. It also describes an extensive, six-year predictive study of high-technology entrepreneurs and international research dealing with entrepreneurs in Italy, Israel, Sweden, and post-communist Poland. Part IV considers ways the typology may be used to create entrepreneurship development programs and describes a comprehensive regional development effort extending over seven years. Particular attention is given to methods of assessing entrepreneurial talent, in existing as well as in prospective entrepreneurs, not only to help select them, but also to aid in the investment decision.
