Reform of the pension regime and developments in the insurance market and its regulation are continually evolving in the Baltic countries, and will surely continue to be a priority on the political agenda in coming years. The OECD has been monitoring and analysing these changes in the framework of the Baltic Regional Programme that is administered by the Centre for Co-operation with Non-Members (CCNM). The aim of this project, which also includes a private pensions publication, is to provide Baltic policy makers and market players with accurate analysis on their insurance and pension markets and assist them in drafting or improving their regulatory and supervisory frameworks. This publication contains individual country reports, with comparative analysis from a regional perspective, and examines key policy issues in the private pension and insurance sectors. A companion volume to this book is Pension Reform in the Baltic Countries (Private Pensions Series No.5) (OECD Website)

Business As A Calling written by Michael and jana Novak and has been published by Free Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-06 with Business & Economics categories.

Why do we work so hard at our jobs, day after day? Why is a job well done important to us? We know there is more to a career than money and prestige, but what exactly do we mean by "fulfillment"? These are old but important questions. They belong with some newly discovered ones: Why are people in business more religious than the population as a whole? What do people of business know, and what do they do, that anchors their faith? In this ground-breaking and inspiring book, Michael Novak ties together these crucial questions by explaining the meaning of work as a vocation. Work should be more than just a job -- it should be a calling. This book explains an important part of our lives in a new way, and readers will instantly recognize themselves in its pages. A larger proportion than ever before of the world's Christians, Jews, and other peoples of faith are spending their working lives in business. Business is a profession worthy of a person's highest ideals and aspirations, fraught with moral possibilities both of great good and of great evil. Novak takes on agonizing problems, such as downsizing, the tradeoffs that must sometimes be faced between profits and human rights, and the pitfalls of philanthropy. He also examines the daily questions of how an honest day's work contributes to the good of many people, both close at hand and far away. Our work connects us with one another. It also makes possible the universal advance out of poverty, and it is an essential prerequisite of democracy and the institutions of civil society. This book is a spiritual feast, for everyone who wants to examine how to make a life through making a living.

Ten central and eastern European countries, along with Cyprus and Malta, joined the European Union in two waves between 2004 and 2007. This volume presents new research on the patterns of migration that resulted from the EU's enlargement. The contributors identify and analyze several new groups of migrants, notably young people without family obligations or clear plans for the future. Including case studies on migrants from Poland, Romania, Hungary, and Latvia--as well as on destination countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany--the resulting collection insightfully points towards future migration trends and sets guidelines for further research.

Selecting By Origin written by Christian Joppke and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Social Science categories.

In a world of mutually exclusive nation-states, international migration constitutes a fundamental anomaly. No wonder that such states have been inclined to select migrants according to their origins. The result is ethnic migration. But Christian Joppke shows that after World War II there has been a trend away from ethnic selectivity and toward non-discriminatory immigration policies across Western states. Indeed, he depicts the modern state in the crossfire of particularistic and universalistic principles and commitments, with universalism gradually winning the upper hand. Thus, the policies that regulate the boundaries of states can no longer invoke the particularisms that constitute these boundaries and the collectivities residing within them. Joppke presents detailed case studies of the United States, Australia, Western Europe, and Israel. His book will be of interest to a broad audience of sociologists, political scientists, historians, legal scholars, and area specialists.
