The Poet Mak Dizdar (d.1971) has become a cultural icon in contemporary Bosnia-Herzegovina. Inspired by the lapidary imagery and epitaphs of medieval Bosnian tombstones, his best-acclaimed collection of poetry, Stone Sleeper , reawakens the medieval voices and assigns them a new role in the historical imagination of contemporary Bosnians. In this study, Amila Buturovic looks at Stone Sleeper's recovery of the ancestral world as an effort to refashion the sentiments of collective belonging. In treating the medieval tombstones as sites of collective memory, Dizdar's poetry evokes new possibilities for Bosnians to cast aside national differences based primarily on religion and embrace a pluralistic identity rooted in the sacred landscape of medieval Bosnia.

"Christianity has always defined itself through fierce opposition to powerful 'heresies'; yet it is only recently that we have begun to retrieve these remarkable, underground traditions, buried beneath the contempt of the Church." "Of these 'heresies' the greatest challenge to the medieval Church was posed by the 'Great Heresy' of the Cathars, who saw themselves as inheritors of a true and long-concealed Christian tradition, but who were also heirs to the age-long teachings of Dualism - the doctrine that cosmos and man are constant battlegrounds between the two principal and irreconcilably opposed forces of good and evil. The Cathars, who were savagely suppressed in the thirteenth century, are the best-known medieval adherents and martyrs of Dualism, but yet behind them we can still glimpse 'one of the most elusive and tenacious heretical sects of the Middle Ages' - the Balkan Bogomils." "In this superb piece of scholarly detective work Yuri Stoyanov charts the descent and evolution of Dualism, from the revelations of Zoroaster and the Orphics, via the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Mithraic Mysteries and the great Gnostic teachers, to reconstruct its medieval revival in Europe. His book casts fresh light on some of the most obscure aspects of the history and the teachings of the Bogomils and the Cathars and illuminates unsuspected religious and political undercurrents that lie beneath the surface of official history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Courtly Culture written by Joachim Bumke and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-01-01 with History categories.

Every aspect of "courtly culture" comes to life in Joachim Bumke's extraordinarily rich and well-documented presentation. A renowned medievalist with an encyclopedic knowledge of original sources and a passion for history, Bumke overlooks no detail, from the material realities of aristocratic society -- the castles and clothing, weapons and transportation, food, drink, and table etiquette -- to the behavior prescribed and practiced at tournaments, knighting ceremonies, and great princely feasts. The courtly knight and courtly lady, and the transforming idea of courtly love, are seen through the literature that celebrated them, and we learn how literacy among an aristocratic laity spread from France through Germany and became the basis of a cultural revolution. At the same time, Bumke clearly challenges those who have comfortably confused the ideals of courtly culture with their expression in courtly society.

Christian dualism originated in the reign of Constans II (641-68). It was a popular religion, which shared with orthodoxy an acceptance of scriptual authority and apostolic tradition and held a sacramental doctrine of salvation, but understood all these in a radically different way to the Orthodox Church. One of the differences was the strong part demonology played in the belief system.
