Alături de Viaţa şi peripeţiile lui Alexis Zorbas şi de Hristos răstignit din nou, Ultima ispită a lui Hristos rămâne una dintre cele mai cunoscute lucrări ale scriitorului cretan: tradusă încă din 1952, înainte de a fi publicată la Atena în 1955, cartea a circulat în 27 de ţări, versiunea germană fiind reeditată de 12 ori, cea franceză şi engleză de câte opt ori. Trei adaptări pentru teatru şi ecranizarea din 1988 realizată de Martin Scorsese au consolidat celebritatea lucrării.
