A palavra falada, as conversas, os bate-papos precederam a leitura da palavra escrita. As rodas de amigos em torno do fogo, as contações de lendas, o boca-a-boca vieram antes da palavra escrita e continuaram muito tempo depois dela surgir. Havia uma necessidade de expor tudo aquilo que era preciso “botar pra fora”. Pois a vontade de manter as relações de amizade ou até mesmo de um convívio entre os povos fazia com que as pessoas falassem. Mas a fala veio muito antes disso. A necessidade orgânica, como a alimentação, também utilizou a oralidade para ser saciada. Contudo, vemos que o homem da caverna, embora emitisse sons e tivesse lá os seus códigos verbais para se comunicar, ele utilizou de uma forma gráfica para marcar a sua existência: o desenho nas pedras. Dessa forma, encontramos aí um dos, senão o primeiro registro da necessidade gráfica da comunicação entre os seres. Nesse momento passou a existir a leitura gráfica. A oralidade necessitava de registro. E o homem começa a escrever. Hoje, cada povo tem os seus símbolos para registrar, graficamente, a sua oralidade. O surgimento e o uso da escrita trouxeram a leitura. Afinal, tudo que se escreve terá que ser lido. E, dessa forma, a escrita foi se apropriando de seu espaço. Entretanto, a leitura oral ainda, na antiguidade, dominava a maior parte da população, uma vez que a palavra escrita era utilizada apenas pelos mais abastados. A leitura dos livros, representante maior da palavra escrita, era para os ricos; os pobres ficavam com as conversas, com os bate-papos. Foi assim que começou a surgir o estigma de que leitura de livros era coisa de gente rica. E, ainda hoje, passados tanto tempo, ainda percebemos uma certa elitização sobre o livro. Para quem hoje se vislumbra com a praticidade oferecida pelos e-books, nem chega a imaginar o longo caminho percorrido pelos livros na História. Companheiro da escrita, os livros tiveram grande importância para a realização de registros históricos, a compilação de leis e a divulgação de ideias. Atualmente, a produção de livros chegou a tal ponto que, por exemplo, o século XX foi responsável por uma literatura histórica superior a de todos os outros séculos somados juntos!
