Uma Conferência sobre Ética (A Lecture on Ethics) de Ludwig Wittgenstein constitui uma importante reflexão sobre o problema da ética. Ocupa um lugar central entre as tomadas de posição relativas a este problema – e não será exagero dizer que representa, sem dúvida, uma das mais notáveis no pensamento do século XX. Mas o mais importante não é propriamente a relevância histórica. O mais importante é que este texto – o complexo dos problemas e perspectivas que desenha, a interpelação de que é portador – representa um elemento incontornável, que não pode deixar de ser considerado por quem quiser confrontar-se com o problema da ética. Ou seja, este é um texto indispensável para quem quiser “instruir o processo” da ética (do seu cabimento, do seu sentido, das suas implicações) de forma efectivamente crítica – i. e., a pensar por si mesmo, mas ao mesmo tempo também com a preocupação de não deixar de fora nada que, mesmo que observado por outrem, possa ser relevante e ter peso para a apreciação do problema na sede própria do pensar por si.

El presente volumen recoge, junto con otros materiales afines, el texto de la conferencia por Ludwig Wittgenstein en la sociedad "The Heretics", en Cambridge, el 2 de enero de 1930. En ella, el filósofo vienés explicita sus opiniones respecto de una problemática por la que siempre se sintió hondamente preocupado, siendo esta determinación la que hace que lo ético ocupe en el conjunto de su obra un sordo lugar central. Porque, en efecto, siendo cierto que muchas de las claves para una comprensión más completa de este texto se hallan repartidas en papeles anteriores, lo es también que, aunque el Wittegenstein posterior no escribiera sobre moral, nunca abandonó su idea de que la ética constituye un valioso documento de una tendencia profunda del espíritu humano. Este insobornable convencimiento resulta especialmente llamativo en alguien como él, que descartaba que la ética se pudiera enseñar, que fuera una ciencia o que resultara posible conducir a los hombres al bien. Tal vez ello tenga que ver, como origen o como resultado, con su esperanza de vida: "mi vida consiste en darme por satisfecho con algunas cosas", declaró en otra ocasión. La introducción ha corrido a cargo de Manuel Cruz, catedrático de Filosofía contemporánea en la Universidad de Barcelona.
