A pesar de que ocupa un lugar privilegiado en el imaginario pictórico de la isla, la obra de Umberto Peña (La Habana, 1937) continúa siendo hasta hoy poco conocida. No existía un libro que recogiera sus óleos, dibujos, grabados, acrílicos..., y que a la vez lo dejara hablar sobre su época, sus obsesiones, sus viajes, Antonia Eiriz o Padilla. Este libro intenta subsanar de golpe estas dos fallas. No sólo porque en él Peña vaya narrando su mundo ayudado por las preguntas que le hacen, sino porque muestra en extenso su obra, esa mezcla de bocas, dientes, cepillos y restos que la constituyen. Carlos A. Aguilera (La Habana, 1970) ha publicado Teoría del alma china (2006), El imperio Oblómov (2014) y Matadero seis (2016), la pieza teatral Discurso de la madre muerta (2012) y Asia Menor (2016), volumen que recoge gran parte de su poesía. Además de los ensayos de Archivo y terror. Operaciones entre literatura, política, teatro y arte (2019) y de la monografía Luis Cruz Azaceta. No exit (2016), tuvo a su cargo el volumen colectivo La Patria Albina. Exilio, escritura y conversación en Lorenzo García Vega (2016). Entre 1997 y 2002 codirigió la revista Diáspora(s), y actualmente coordina el sello FluXus, dedicado a la imagen, en la editorial Rialta, y el proyecto in-cubadora. Reside en Praga.

While anxieties about representations of violence in comics have largely fallen to the wayside since the moral panic of the 1950s, thematic and symbolic visual depictions of violence remain central to the comics form. BOOM! SPLAT! Comics and Violence examines violence in every iteration—physical violence enacted between people and their environments, formal and structural violence embedded in the comics language itself, representations of historical violence, and ways of reading and seeing violence. BOOM! SPLAT! is composed of fifteen essays from renowned comics scholars and is organized thematically into four sections, including an examination of histories of violence, forms of violence, modes and systems of violence, and political and social violence. Chapters focus on well-known comics and comics creators, such as Steve Ditko, Hulk, X-Men, and the Marvel universe, to newspaper cartoon strips, postwar graphic novels, revolution, civil rights, trauma, #blacklivesmatter, and more. BOOM! SPLAT! serves as a resource to scholars and comics enthusiasts who wish to contemplate and confront the permutations, forms, structures, and discourses of violence that have always animated cartoons. So wrote Clorinda Matto de Turner in Aves sin nido, the first major Spanish American novel to protest the plight of native peoples. First published in 1889, Birds without a Nest drew fiery protests for its unsparing expose of small town officials, judicial authorities, and priests who oppressed the native peoples of Peru. Matto de Turner was excommunicated by the Catholic Church and burned in effigy. Yet her novel was strongly influential; indeed, Peruvian President Andres Avelino Caceres credited it with stimulating him to pursue needed reforms. In 1904, the novel was published in a bowdlerized English translation with a modified ending. This edition restores the original ending and the translator's omissions. It will be important reading for all students of the indigenous cultures of South America.
