Oltre che per le opere di poesia e di teatro, Pukin è considerato un classico anche per i suoi racconti che hanno lasciato una potente impronta sulla narrativa russa successiva, al punto che autori come Tolstoj ne raccomandano la lettura e lo studio. I racconti di Belkin (1830), che furono apprezzati tra gli altri e tradotti in francese da Mérimée, sono piccoli capolavori di realismo, per la loro essenzialità: rappresentano semplici figure, dai sentimenti autentici, in una narrazione lineare e con splendide scene di sfondo. Sono cinque racconti che lautore attribuisce a un certo Ivan Petrović Belkin, che li avrebbe uditi raccontare e poi trascritti: sono la storia di un duello rimandato e di un rancore covato nel tempo, quella di un amore contrastato tra una ricca fanciulla e un semplice fante, quella di un fabbricante di bare e del suo invito ai morti ad andarlo a trovare, quella di un padre vedovo lasciato solo dallunica figlia, e quella di una nobile di provincia che inganna in amore il povero vicino. La dama di picche (1833), messa in musica da Čajkovskij, è uno dei racconti più caratteristici di Pukin: mescolando alla narrazione realistica elementi fantastici, narra dellossessione, fino alla follia, di un giovane per il segreto di una contessa che vince sempre alle carte. La figlia del capitano (1836) è un romanzo storico ispirato alla rivolta di Pugacëv, narrato in prima persona, di modo che le vicende storiche sono filtrate dalla prospettiva privata e divengono cronaca familiare. Chiude il volume il racconto Kirdzali.

C’è un passo di Dovlatov in cui alcuni russi emigrati in America si lamentavano del fatto che i propri figli, americani, non sapevano leggere il russo, e sarebbero cresciuti senza poter leggere Dostoevskij in originale. ‘Come faranno?’ ‘Come faranno?’, ‘Come potranno vivere senza aver letto Dostoevskij in originale?’ si chiedevano tutti, fino a che uno non ha detto: ‘Be’, anche Puškin non ha mai letto Dostoevskij in originale’. Ecco, la cosa incredibile, a leggere questi racconti e questo romanzo, è che furono scritti quando la letteratura russa dell’Ottocento non esisteva.”
