Die Umweltverschmutzung war und ist besonders heute ein hochaktuelles Thema. Es wurde bzw. wird auf allen Ebenen der Gesellschaft politisch, wissenschaftlich-technisch, sozial, wirtschaftlich – debattiert. In keinem Bereich des Lebens fehlt diese Debatte. Auch in der Literatur hat sie Eingang gefunden, denn die Umweltzerstörung und die Notwendigkeit, ihr entgegenzuwirken, schlagen sich nicht nur in der Fach- und Sachliteratur nieder. Auch in fiktionaler Literatur ist sie sehr präsent. Die vorliegende Studie befasst sich mit dem Umgang der Menschen mit der Natur in den Märchen der Fon aus Benin und in den Grimm‘schen Kinder-und Hausmärchen. Das Märchenkorpus basiert auf jahrelangen Feldforschungen, die nicht nur in den Fon-Gebieten, sondern auch in weiteren Regionen Benins, wo die Fon ansässig sind, durchgeführt wurden, denn die Fon-Märchen werden immer noch zum Teil mündlich überliefert. Ausgehend von verschiedenen Theorien und Ansätzen der Umweltethik und der germanistischen Märchenforschung werden in dieser Arbeit die Verhaltensweisen menschlicher Protagonist /-innen zur Natur in den Märchen der Fon und in den Grimm‘schen Märchen unter ethischem, narratologischem, strukturalistischem, pragmatischem sowie semiotischem Blickwinkel erörtert. Sie zeigt, dass die Umweltproblematik seit jeher in allen Gesellschaften der Welt ein wichtiges Thema ist und hebt somit die gesellschaftliche Relevanz der Folklore in dieser hochmodernen Welt hervor.
