Der Autor untersucht seinen Gegenstand, den sogenannten real existierenden Sozialismus, zum erstenmal als Komplex von soziokulturellen Mustern (Praxisformen): von Lebensweise und Lebensstilen, Leistungsmustern und politischer Kultur, hauptsächlich anhand von Materialien aus der DDR und der UdSSR. Ethnosoziologischer Ansatz und weit gefaßter Kulturbegriff öffnen den Blick für die reale Beschaffenheit dieses Gesellschaftstypus in seiner zunehmenden Erstarrung und Stagnation. Der Verfasser zeigt ihn als Niedergangs- und Auflösungsstadium des sowjetisch geprägten Frühsozialismus nach dem Entwicklungsbruch von Mitte der fünfziger Jahre. In diesem Stadium verlor das System mehr und mehr seine innovativen Potenzen. Dafür suchte es nach Ersatz im westlichen Konkurrenz- und Partnersystem, zu dem es sich immer noch als Alternative darstellte. Der Realsozialismus wollte sich aus dem westlichen Kapitalismus ebenso wie aus überholten Praktiken und Traditionen der Vergangenheit regenerieren, zu seiner Legitimation aber gleichzeitig von alldem abgrenzen. An solcher Unvereinbarkeit ist er letztlich zerbrochen.Diesen Vorgang analysiert der Verfasser in den verschiedenen relevanten Politikbereichen wie auch in der Alltagskultur und im geistigen Leben der realsozialistischen Gesellschaft. Material- und ideenreich relativiert das Buch manche verfestigte Vorstellung und regt zu weiterer Forschung aus der Sicht von Demokratie und der Frage nach authentischem Sozialismus an. Weitgehende Untergliederung und ein ausführliches Register erleichtern den Zugang zu den enthaltenen Informationen und Denkanstößen.

Übergreifende neue europäische Trends, wie die Expansion des Sozialstaats, vollzogen sich in wechselseitiger Beobachtung und Konkurrenz. Umweltprobleme oder die Ölkrisen machten eben nicht an der Mauer halt und in beiden Teilstaaten entstand ein Massentourismus. Ebenso setzten westliche Innovationen, wie die Computerisierung oder die neuen Protestbewegungen, auch die DDR unter Druck. Deutlich wird dabei, dass besonders die DDR stark auf die Bundesrepublik bezogen blieb, was mit zu ihrem Niedergang beitrug. Zugleich zeigt das Buch die Differenzen und das Auseinanderwachsen von Ost und West, wodurch fortbestehende Unterschiede nach 1990 historisch erklärt werden.

Zehntausende Menschen protestierten am 12. September 1988 vor dem ungarischen Parlament gegen das Wasserkraftprojekt Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros. Was mit vereinzelten kritischen Stimmen in der Untergrundpresse begann, entwickelte sich innerhalb weniger Jahre zu einer schlagkräftigen Bewegung gegen den kommunistischen Megabau. Es war kein Zufall, dass sich unter den DemonstrantInnen zahlreiche ÖsterreicherInnen befanden. Die Donaubewegung bildete einen Kristallisationspunkt für Protest, der weit über die Grenzen Ungarns hinausreichte. Dies war die Leistung von einer Handvoll AktivistInnen, die es wagten, jenseits des Eisernen Vorhang nach Verbündeten zu suchen. Denn spätestens als bekannt wurde, dass sich Österreich am Kraftwerksbau beteiligen würde, geriet der lokale Protest zu einer mitteleuropäischen Angelegenheit. On 12 September 1988, tens of thousands of people protested against the Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros hydropower project in front of the Hungarian parliament in Budapest. What began with a few critical voices in the underground press, quickly developed into a powerful movement against the communist mega-construction. It was no coincidence that there were many Austrians among the protesters. The Danube Movement has become a focal point for protest that reached far beyond the borders of Hungary. This was the achievement of a handful of activists who dared to look for allies across the Iron Curtain. Once they learned that Austria would participate in the construction of the power plant, the local protest became a Central European affair.
