Salvaguardia ecologica e lavoro sono due aspetti fondamentali, purtroppo spesso messi in concorrenza, per garantire la presenza dell’uomo sulla Terra. Finora le occasioni per riflettere in modo organico ed esplicito sul loro rapporto e intorno a come esso venga elaborato nelle rappresentazioni artistico-culturali contemporanee sono state rare e, tranne per alcuni lavori, tale binomio non è stato ancora oggetto di un’analisi sistematica. L’impiego prevalente del colore in luogo del bianco e nero nelle immagini analogiche ha mutato profondamente le abitudini visive, inaugurando di fatto un nuovo regime percettivo. A partire dalla color wave che ha investito i film studies in anni recenti, e nel quadro teoricometodologico della cultura visuale e dell’archeologia dei media, il volume intende ricostruire alcuni momenti chiave della transizione al colore verificatasi nella produzione iconica nazionale: come è avvenuto il passaggio di massa alle immagini a colori nello scenario mediale italiano? Quali forme di negoziazione di questa innovazione tecnologica ed estetica sono state messe a punto? Dal momento che la “cromatizzazione del visibile” si è compiuta in maniera graduale a partire dal basso, dalle produzioni minori e dai fenomeni più “banali” e sommersi, per misurare l’esposizione alle nuove immagini a colori nei termini di una loro circolazione sociale ci si è rivolti ad alcuni prodotti e dispositivi della cultura visiva popolare, in particolare a tre comparti mediali distinti ma fortemente interrelati: i settimanali illustrati, alcune produzioni cinematografiche popolari e amatoriali e la televisione, assumendo una definizione ampia di “modernità” che si estende dagli anni Trenta agli anni Settanta inoltrati.

It explores cinematic representations of homosexuality and their significance in a wider cultural struggle in Italy involving society, cinema, and sexuality between the 1940s and 1970s. Besides tracing the evolution of representations through both art and popular films, this book also analyses connections with consumer culture, film criticism and politics. Giori uncovers how complicated negotiations between challenges to and valorization of dominant forms of knowledge of homosexuality shaped representations and argues that they were not always the outcome of hatred but also sought to convey unmentionable pleasures and complicities. What is the place of materiality—the expression or condition of physical substance—in our visual age of rapidly changing materials and media? How is it fashioned in the arts or manifested in virtual forms? In Surface, cultural critic and theorist Giuliana Bruno deftly explores these questions, seeking to understand materiality in the contemporary world. Arguing that materiality is not a question of the materials themselves but rather the substance of material relations, Bruno investigates the space of those relations, examining how they appear on the surface of different media—on film and video screens, in gallery installations, or on the skins of buildings and people. The object of visual studies, she contends, goes well beyond the image and engages the surface as a place of contact between people and art objects. As Bruno threads through these surface encounters, she unveils the fabrics of the visual—the textural qualities of works of art, whether manifested on canvas, wall, or screen. Illuminating the modern surface condition, she notes how façades are becoming virtual screens and the art of projection is reinvented on gallery walls. She traverses the light spaces of artists Robert Irwin, James Turrell, Tacita Dean, and Anthony McCall; touches on the textured surfaces of Isaac Julien’s and Wong Kar-wai’s filmic screens; and travels across the surface materiality in the architectural practices of Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Herzog & de Meuron to the art of Doris Salcedo and Rachel Whiteread, where the surface tension of media becomes concrete. Michelangelo Antonioni is one of the great visual artists of the cinema. The central and distinguishing strength of Antonioni's mature films, Seymour Chatman argues, is narration by a kind of visual minimalism, by an intense concentration on the sheer appearance of things and a rejection of explanatory dialogue. Though traditional audiences have balked at the "opacity" of Antonioni's films, it is precisely their rendered surface that is so eloquent once one learns to read it. Not despite, but through, their silences the films show a deep concern with the motives, perceptions and vicissitudes of the emotional life. This study covers films not dealt with in any other book on the great director, including Il mistero di Obertwald (1980) and Identificazione di una donna (1982), which have not yet been seen in the U.S. Its coverage of the early documentaries and features, when Antonioni was forging his new and original stylistic "language," is especially full.
