Esta obra aborda un interrogante que de modo cada vez más intenso y urgente se hacen gran número de personas: si Dios existe, ¿por qué no se hace presente de manera tangible, por qué no actúa e interviene de forma eficaz y evidente para suscitar cuanto de positivo desea promover en la humanidad? Es un clamor que se expresa, explícitamente o en lo más íntimo de muchos, como un reclamo por momentos dramático: “Dios, ¿por qué no me das la fe que tanto deseo?”. ¿A qué se deberá esta “ausencia de Dios” que inquieta y provoca a creyentes y no creyentes? ¿Por qué Dios se presenta de tal manera que una multitud de seres humanos pueden pensar con total sinceridad y honestidad que no existe? ¿Qué podrá significar al respecto la frase de Simone Weil, audaz e intrigante: “Dios sólo puede estar presente en la creación en forma de ausencia. La ausencia de Dios es el testimonio más maravilloso del amor perfecto”? El ateísmo, aún el más instintivo, tiene una implícita racionalidad y contiene una justificación que merecen ser desentrañadas y exigen una respuesta adecuada. ¿Qué explicaciones y qué imagen de Dios es posible presentar que respondan lo más adecuadamente posible a esas interpelaciones? Con profundidad y lucidez el autor enfrenta este desafío ofreciendo un aporte propio, en cierta medida inédito respecto a la literatura existente.
