Y, tanto en la una como en la otra, la pluma de Shapiro va más allá de los discursos habituales y obliga al lector a revisar presupuestos y a adoptar una perspectiva distinta a la establecida. Locke se presenta aquí como defensor de la legitimidad democrática, y no (o no solo) como liberal. Madison aparece como defensor de una teoría pluralista de la democracia que Shapiro defiende como el mejor recurso a nuestro alcance contra la dominación. Pero esas y otras singularidades teóricas no se presentan aisladas, redactadas en exclusiva para la torre de marfil. Muy al contrario, se entremezclan y se traen a colación al alimón con la realidad de nuestro mundo.
