Mr. Pinner was a God-fearing man, who was afraid of everything except respectability. He married Mrs. Pinner when they were both twenty, and by the time they were both thirty if he had had to do it again he wouldn’t have. For Mrs. Pinner had several drawbacks. One was, she quarrelled; and Mr. Pinner, who prized peace, was obliged to quarrel too. Another was, she appeared to be unable to have children; and Mr. Pinner, who was fond of children, accordingly couldn’t have them either. And another, which while it lasted was in some ways the worst, was that she was excessively pretty. This was most awkward in a shop. It continually put Mr. Pinner in false positions. And it seemed to go on so long. There seemed to be no end to the years of Mrs. Pinner’s prettiness. They did end, however; and when she was about thirty-five, worn out by her own unquiet spirit and the work of helping Mr. Pinner in the shop, as well as keeping house for him, which included doing everything single-handed, by God’s mercy she at last began to fade. Mr. Pinner was pleased. For though her behaviour had been beyond criticism, and she had invariably, by a system of bridling and head-tossing, kept off familiarity on the part of male customers, still those customers had undoubtedly been more numerous than the others, and Mr. Pinner hadn’t liked it. It was highly unnatural, he knew, for gentlemen on their way home from their offices to wish to buy rice, for instance, when it had been bought earlier in the day by their wives or mothers. There was something underhand about it; and he, who being timid was also honest, found himself not able to be happy if there were a shadow of doubt in his mind as to the honourableness of any of his transactions. He never got used to these purchases, and was glad when the gradual disappearance of his wife’s beauty caused the gradual disappearance of the customers who made them. Money, it was true, was lost, but he preferred to lose it than to make it by means that verged in his opinion on shady.

The essays included in this collection examine issues such as identity and ideology which are at play in the female autobiography practice, along with the problematicity that these trigger in terms of self-representation and traditional formal boundaries. The women writers analyzed here through mainly historical, literary, feminist and psychoanalytic lenses cover a long period in the history of Italy, spanning from the Fascist era to our time. In an attempt to organize and connect these texts which are chronologically far apart, we have divided our contributions into two main parts. The first, “Shapes of Ideology,” includes authors interacting primarily with political ideology in a way that eventually entails the challenge of the official “technologies of gender” (De Lauretis, 1987) and implicitly, a reflection on the gendered identity. In the second part, “Reconsidering ideology, negotiating autobiography,” while the political ideology is not completely excluded, it becomes however something more internalized and relevant to the writers’ quest for identity. Such process bears consequences with respect to the canon of autobiography, as authors experiment with new forms of autobiographical narratives and readers become more and more an integral component of this personal endeavor.

Pubblicato originariamente nel 1898, "Elizabeth and her German Garden" fu il primo libro di Marie Annette Beauchamp – conosciuta per tutta la vita come Elizabeth. Il libro fu pubblicato in forma anonima. Elizabeth era una cugina della scrittrice più famosa Katherine Mansfield (il cui vero nome era Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp). Nata in Australia, Elizabeth fu educata in Inghilterra, e sposò poi un conte tedesco, von Arnim. Nel 1897 gli Arnim si trasferirono nell'antica residenza familiare di Nassenheide (oggi Rzedsiny, Polonia). Il libro, ispirato dall'amore per il giardino di quella antica casa, fu pubblicato l'anno successivo ed ebbe un successo clamoroso (ben 21 edizioni nel 1899), tanto che da allora l'autrice firmò le maggior parte delle opere successive con l'espressione «by the author of "Elizabeth and her German garden". Tornata in Inghilterra dopo la morte del marito, Elizabeth divenne amica di intellettuali di spicco come Wells, e Bertrand Russell (di cui sposò il fratello). La sua scrittura è leggera, ironica, critica delle convenzioni sociali, e l’autrice è stata rivalutata recentemente come scrittrice “femminista ante-litteram”, per le sue critiche alle convinzioni e convenzioni di genere. Traduzione di Silvia Cecchini dall’edizione integrale del 1900 (le edizioni successive alla prima furono poi private della parte dei ricordi d’infanzia della protagonista).
