A me premeva una cosa sola, di entrare al possibile nel senti mento dell'autore; e non rifuggo talvolta dal rival gere la stessa idea, per togliermi ogni dubbio, e piu imprimermi que/la verita nell'animo. Del resto, a me pare che il dissenso d'uomiui egregi intorno all 'interpretazione d'un passo qualunque di sommo autore, sia molto ragionevole scusa a chi, per cercare il senso vero di quel passo, va un po' per le lunghe. Quale che sia, la mia povera fatica presso che terminata: l'accoglienza di questo saggio dira a me e a' benevoli editori se puo continuar la pubblicazione. Per obbligo e per piacere, quasi tutti abbiamo letto i Promessi sposi. Una diffusione enorme che ha reso i personaggi, tanti episodi, tante espressioni tipiche familiari, anzi proverbiali della nostra cultura. Un romanzo che ha davvero fatto l'Italia, almeno nei suoi aspetti migliori, grazie a un messaggio politico e pedagogico che è tempo di riscoprire. Forse perché lo leggiamo troppo presto o forse perché siamo costretti a farlo a scuola, sta di fatto che, in generale, abbiamo una opinione abbastanza grigia e sfocata dei Promessi sposi. Spesso ci rimanda un'immagine di compunzione religiosa e di moderatismo accomodante simile a certe vecchie fotografie che troviamo nelle case dei nostri nonni e che faticano a parlarci ancora. Ecco, vi invitiamo a (ri)leggere i Promessi sposi in modo un po' diverso dal solito, cioè in compagnia non di un letterato, ma di uno studioso di storia d'Italia. Scopriremo così che i Promessi sposi hanno un carattere fortemente politico e ci dicono moltissimo sulla nostra storia, non solo quella del Seicento, sul nostro carattere nazionale, sull'impronta che il cattolicesimo ha lasciato, nel bene e nel male, nella nostra coscienza morale. Torneranno alla luce l'importanza e il valore del messaggio ideologico al cuore di questo romanzo: una morale privata basata su libertà di scelta e responsabilità individuale, per uomini e donne; un illuminato senso della misura nella valutazione delle cose del mondo, ma con una consapevolezza acuta della giustizia e dell'ingiustizia dei contesti sociali e delle azioni dei singoli.
