*** "The instrumental genre ruined music," Stendhal wrote in his 1814 description of the Italian music scene. His opinion, widely shared and echoed over several decades, loomed large on the standard repertory and its objective evaluation. This volume aims at reaching a more balanced assessment. Major figures from that era are explored, who helped shape that repertory. Unknown aspects of their music and its circulation, both at home and abroad, are highlighted. New historical data are presented, and compositions are discussed that are either unknown or approached from an unusual perspective.

Francesco Pollini (Ljubljana, 26 March 1762 – Milan, 17 September 1846) was the preeminent figure among Italian pianists of the early nineteenth century. A student of Mozart, he enjoyed considerable fame not only as a pianist and composer but also – and above all – as a pedagogue. In 1811, he was commissioned by the Milan Conservatory to author a piano method, the first of its kind to be published in Italy. Printed by Ricordi in 1812 and reprinted in 1834 by the same publisher, the Method develops several aspects of pianistic technique and performance practice. This critical edition, provided with a parallel English translation, presents the Method’s text and its 400 examples and exercises based on the most complete edition of 1834. The introduction retraces the complex publishing history of the Method, discusses in detail the typology of the instrument, and examines several technical and performance practice issues addressed in Pollini’s text (articulation, touch, rhythmic flexibility, improvisation, ornamentation, pedaling, etc.). The Apparatus presents the differences between the several editions and their different states.

The original 'International Man of Mystery,' the Count St. Germain, was an 18th century European aristocrat of unknown origin. He had no visible means of support, but no lack of resources, and moved in high social circles. He was a renowned conversationalist and a skilled musician. He dropped hints that he was centuries old and could grow diamonds. He never ate in public, was ambidextrous, and as far as anyone could tell, totally celibate. He served as a backchannel diplomat between England and France, and may have played some role in Freemasonry. He hobnobbed with Marie Antoinette, Catherine the Great, Voltaire, Rousseau, Mesmer, and Casanova. He dabbled in materials and textile technology as well as alchemy, as did many intellectuals of the time (e.g., Newton). These are established historical facts, documented by the extensive collection of contemporary accounts in this book. He is a subject of interest for students of the esoteric.

The year 1543 marked the beginning of a new global consciousness in Japan with the arrival of shipwrecked Portuguese merchants on Tanegashima Island in southern Japan. Other Portuguese soon followed and Japan became aware of a world beyond India. After the merchants came the first missionary Francis Xavier in 1549, beginning the Christian century in Japan. This is not a new story, but it is the first time that Japanese, Portuguese and other European accounts have been brought together and presented in English. Their arrival was recorded by the Japanese in Tanegashima kafu, the Teppoki and the Kunitomo teppoki, here translated and presented together with European reports. Includes maps, and Portuguese and Japanese illustrations.

Asylums written by Erving Goffman and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-08 with Social Science categories.

A total institution is defined by Goffman as a place of residence and work where a large number of like-situated, individuals, cut off from the wider society for an appreciable period of time, together lead an enclosed, formally administered round of life. Prisons serve as a clear example, providing we appreciate that what is prison-like about prisons is found in institutions whose members have broken no laws. This volume deals with total institutions in general and, mental hospitals, in particular. The main focus is, on the world of the inmate, not the world of the staff. A chief concern is to develop a sociological version of the structure of the self. Each of the essays in this book were intended to focus on the same issue--the inmate's situation in an institutional context. Each chapter approaches the central issue from a different vantage point, each introduction drawing upon a different source in sociology and having little direct relation to the other chapters. This method of presenting material may be irksome, but it allows the reader to pursue the main theme of each paper analytically and comparatively past the point that would be allowable in chapters of an integrated book. If sociological concepts are to be treated with affection, each must be traced back to where it best applies, followed from there wherever it seems to lead, and pressed to disclose the rest of its family.
