This book focuses on the role of the emperor and the image of the Roman Empire as a whole during the time period from Augustus to Constantine. It analyses this image by taking into account the epigraphic, literary, numismatic and archaeological sources from Phoenicia to Osrhoene and from Commagene to Arabia. While discussing Graeco-Roman cities and rural settlements among desert areas, it addresses celebrations as well as the organization and promotion of the imperial cult in the Near East. This includes the imperial cult’s forms of expression of symbolic, political, and various other social or religious functions. L' "utopie " est un lieu qui ne s'avoue pas. Quand la mémoire s'en retire c'est l'histoire qui s'installe. Villes neuves et nouvelles sont les symptômes des impossibles poliorcétiques. La typicité et la marginalité de certaines expériences poussent à en chercher la singularité dans un retour sur une position, celle d'un objet complexe l'urbain : son utopie mise en perspective à partir de son cadre, un lien social à l'origine d'un projet de renouveau volontaire – son moment – pose la question des représentations d'un ensemble de protagonistes et cerne une demande sociale, interroge sur les affaires des uns et des autres : militant, intellectuel, chercheur, "animateur de l'enfance " sur un terrain initial, "initiatique " où concept et mythe s'entrecroisent dans un mouvement de soi vers l'autre : le "moment " utopique donne à la fois le temps et l'élan d'un premier mouvement et une première parenthèse. Surgit l'habitant lointain d'un univers exposé à l'incertaine et aléatoire présence de l'enquêteur. Il s'agit de trouver quelque raison d'être à "être habitant ", réhabiliter une ambulation de proximité. Dans les rêves d'intégration il s'agit de prendre le monde au mot. Le sociologue prudent saura tenir sa langue et échapper au choc des valeurs. La neutralité axiologique n'épouse pas nécessairement les incertitudes partisanes. Il faut raison garder et quitter les certitudes de la reproductibilité. Penser le social ni plein ni vide mais incertain et flou et, considérer les débords. Reposer le problème de la singularité dans la compréhension du social, de l'invention des moyens de l'échange, d'une labilité de l'être, de l'insaisissable haleine à la respiration profonde, en deçà des laxismes et des crispations épistémologiques, retrouver les cœurs des variations, rencontrer dans l'interposition les voix du social, un accès au monde et à une figure de l'humain qui en subvertit les déformations.
