In una mite sera d’autunno, Natalia e Martin tornano in bicicletta da una cena al loro solito ristorante greco di Erlangen, in Germania. Ha piovuto e la strada è bagnata e buia. La ciclabile è troppo stretta per viaggiare affiancati. Martin, che ha bevuto tre ouzo, pedala forte e ogni tanto si mette a cantare. Natalia resta indietro, impacciata sulla bicicletta dell’ex fidanzata di Martin, troppo grande per lei. Nel buio, nota una sagoma scura sulla sua destra, un uomo incappucciato, avvolto in un cappotto nero, che saltella sul marciapiede. Continuando a saltellare, l’uomo la raggiunge, le taglia la strada e si allontana. Poco prima di frenare e poggiare i piedi per terra, Natalia si rende conto di avere una sostanza appiccicosa sulla faccia: uno sputo. Ore dopo, sotto shock, la ragazza ricorda agli inquirenti il tragico succedersi degli eventi: lei che urla a Martin di raggiungerla e, indignata, lo ragguaglia sull’offesa ricevuta, Martin che si lancia rabbiosamente all’inseguimento dell’uomo nero, Martin e l’incappucciato che lottano, Martin che si accascia al suolo, colpito mortalmente da numerose coltellate, l’incappucciato che fugge. Articoli a pagina piena sui giornali, servizi in tv, con i residenti della zona che piangono o mostrano flaconi di spray al pepe, e cani che annusano il punto in cui è avvenuto il crimine, il caso desta uno scalpore enorme in Germania. La polizia indaga innanzi tutto nel luogo di lavoro di Natalia, l’istituto universitario dove la ragazza figura tra i collaboratori di un noto cattedratico di storia antica e tardo-antica, un professore il cui cognome suona italiano – anzi meridionale, cam pano, pugliese o lucano –ma le cui origini risultano ignote alla sua stessa cerchia di assistenti e collaboratori. Nella scarsità degli indizi, gli inquirenti cercano in primo luogo di venire a capo di singolari lettere anonime in cui l’autore prova a entrare nella men te dell’assassino. Una volta viene presentato un nazi sta, un’altra volta un tossicodipendente che frequenta concerti rock, oppure un cittadino insospettabile che fa amicizia con il suo coltello da cucina... Toccato personalmente dall’omicidio di un ragazzo italiano avvenuto il 28 maggio 2013 a Monaco di Baviera e tuttora irrisolto (il delitto avvenne a trecento metri da casa sua e la fidanzata del ragazzo era una sua studentessa), Marco Montemarano – vincitore della prima edizione del Premio Nazionale di Letteratura Neri Pozza con La ricchezza – ha scritto un romanzo che ripercorre una storia vera per non consegnarla all’oblio e, insieme, un’opera in cui i temi propri della sua scrittura, l’estraneità al mondo e la faticosa ricerca della propria identità, si danno mirabilmente appuntamento. Gabriele D'Annunzio, Prince of Montenevoso, Duke of Gallese (12 March 1863 - 1 March 1938), was an Italian poet, journalist, playwright and soldier during World War I. He occupied a prominent place in Italian literature from 1889 to 1910 and later political life from 1914 to 1924. He was often referred to under the epithets Il Vate ("the Poet") or Il Profeta ("the Prophet").During the First World War, perception of D'Annunzio in Italy transformed from literary figure into a national war hero. He was associated with the elite Arditi storm troops of the Italian Army and took part in actions such as the Flight over Vienna. As part of an Italian nationalist reaction against the Paris Peace Conference, he set up the short-lived Italian Regency of Carnaro in Fiume (Rijeka, today's Croatia) with himself as Duce. The constitution made "music" the fundamental principle of the state and was corporative in nature. Though D'Annunzio never declared himself a fascist, he has been described as the forerunner of Italian fascism as his ideas and aesthetics influenced it and the style of Benito Mussolini.
