Dentro de la trayectoria literaria de Sor Juana Inés destaca la dimensión poética. Algunos de sus poemas son muy conocidos y celebradas quizá por su sencillez métrica y por su estilo coloquial y directo, de fácil comprensión frente a otros poemas mucho más complejos de temática filosófica, teológica y mitológica. Cabe destacar siempre que Sor Juana Inés fue una gran sonetista, entre sus sonetospodemos encontrar gran variedad de asuntos: filosóficos, morales, históricos-mitológicos, satíricos-burlescos, amorosos y de discreción, como los poemas sagrados que conforman una parte especial de su corpus poético. La presente antología de Poemas de sor Juana Inés de la Cruz comprende sonetos, rendondillas, romances, endechas. La opinión que sigue es una más, como no podía ser menos, entre las reacciones ante la fuerza innovadora y la manifestación de una voluntad literaria femenina de Sor Juana. Así se le juzgó en vida y luego durante los siglos siguientes. Quizás porque su espíritu poético solo pudo valorado en su esplendor en el siglo XX. Veamos cómo Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo ejemplifica los prejuicios que despertó el talento de Sor Juana: «No parece gran elogio para sor Juana declararla superior a todos los poetas del reinado de Carlos II, época ciertamente infelicísima para las letras amenas, aunque no lo fuera tanto, ni con mucho, para otros ramos de nuestra cultura. Pero valga por lo que valga, nadie puede negarle esa palma en lo lírico, así como a Bances Candamo hay que otorgársela entre los dramáticos y a Solís entre los prosistas.» Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo
